Tether USDt price steady as Iran-linked volume claim raises compliance focus

- Tether says it froze approximately 550 million USD in Iran-linked USDT during 2026.
- Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino claims Iran-linked stablecoin volumes fell 94 percent after wallet freezes.
- Independent TRM Labs data shows USDT's share of on-chain volume in Iran-attributed wallets fell from 67 percent in 2025 to 14 percent in August 2026.
The Tether USDt price was listed at 0.9988 USD on the retrieved Investing.com USDT/USD page, which showed a daily range of 0.9986 to 0.9996 USD. The quote remains close to the stablecoin's 1 USD target, so the more significant development for investors is regulatory and compliance-related rather than a conventional price move.
In an article published on October 21, ForexCrunch reported that Tether Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino said wallet freezes had reduced Iran-linked stablecoin volumes by 94 percent. Ardoino made the claim in an October 19 post on X while responding to a September 28 report from the Democratic staff of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
What the competing figures show
The Senate report examined 846 sanctioned or otherwise Iran-linked wallets and found that 84 percent predominantly used Tether's USDT, according to ForexCrunch. The report accused Tether of providing a significant financial lifeline to Iran's shadow-banking network and focused partly on the period before 2024.
Tether's response covers a different period and uses company-reported figures. The issuer says it froze approximately 550 million USD in Iran-linked USDT during 2026, with more than 470 million USD frozen in April and July. Ardoino also said Tether acted, on average, four weeks before official designations by the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control and Israel's National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing, and before Chainalysis labels in 99 percent of cases.
Why the price signal is limited
ForexCrunch noted that TRM Labs data points in the same direction but measures something different: USDT's share of on-chain volume in Iran-attributed wallets declined from 67 percent in 2025 to 14 percent in August 2026. That independent shift does not verify Tether's 94 percent claim, for which the company has not published a methodology. For holders and traders, the dispute is therefore primarily a compliance and headline-risk issue, not evidence of a new supply event or a break in the dollar peg.
