- The planned convertible bonds would carry no coupon or maturity yield and could be converted into shares after one year.
- First-half attendance, operating profit and EBITDA all improved, while the cinema network continued to shrink.
- CJ CGV is using premium formats, subsidiaries and cost controls to strengthen its position in the entertainment market.
CJ CGV is preparing a private convertible-bond issue that could ease financing pressure while creating a potential dilution risk for shareholders. MoneyToday reported on November 2 that the South Korean cinema operator is considering bearer, unsecured bonds worth 120 billion won, with the final amount and conversion price still to be determined.
The proposed bonds would mature in five years, carry a zero coupon and offer no yield at maturity, according to a term sheet cited by MoneyToday. Investors would be able to request conversion into shares from one year after issuance until one month before maturity. Put options would become available every three months from the second year, while the reported structure would not include repricing if the share price falls.
Recovery improves operating momentum
The financing plan comes as CJ CGV reports stronger operating trends. Domestic attendance reached 57.05 million in the first half of 2026, 34.2 percent above the prior-year period and the highest level since the onset of the pandemic, MoneyToday reported. Consolidated operating profit rose 310 percent to 20.2 billion won, while EBITDA increased 21.8 percent to 178.8 billion won.
The improvement has not removed the need for cost control. CJ CGV reduced its cinema count by 20 over the past year and a half to 176 locations at the end of June. The company is also expanding through CJ 4DPLEX, which develops immersive cinema technologies and produces specialized content, while CJ Olive Network provides information-technology services within and beyond the group.
Business spans cinemas and media
CJ CGV operates cultureplex cinemas and related entertainment businesses, including global operations, media marketing, media art and platform services. Its corporate website describes a model built around cultural content, customer experiences and sustainable entertainment. The company is based in South Korea and combines domestic exhibition with overseas subsidiaries and technology-led premium formats.
