- Formosa Petrochemical plans to reduce crude processing at its Mailiao refinery to 320,000 barrels per day in November.
- Investors will focus on maintenance duration, restart timing and the effect of regional fuel margins.
- The company remains exposed to both refining conditions and weaker petrochemical spreads.
Formosa Petrochemical plans to reduce crude oil processing at its Mailiao refinery to 320,000 barrels per day in November as several units undergo maintenance. Reuters, republished by Stockopedia, reported the plan on October 16, citing company president KY Lin.
The November target compares with planned October processing of 430,000 barrels per day and a refinery nameplate capacity of 540,000 barrels per day. The company processed 490,000 barrels per day in September, according to the report.
Maintenance Sets Near-Term Capacity
Formosa Petrochemical has started a turnaround at its vacuum distillation unit scheduled to last 49 days. A delayed coking unit was also due to shut for 55 days, while the refinery's No. 2 crude distillation unit was scheduled to stop by the end of October for 38 days.
Management said the crude distillation unit could restart earlier if margins for naphtha and fuel oil remain attractive. The timing creates a near-term operating variable for investors: a faster restart would limit the volume effect, while extended work could keep throughput and product availability under pressure.
Earnings Depend On Product Spreads
Formosa Petrochemical's outlook combines support from resilient refining margins with pressure in commodity chemicals. S&P Global Ratings said on November 3 that the group's refining operations benefit from its integrated scale, while oversupply and weak downstream demand remain risks for commodity chemical margins.
The immediate focus is therefore operational rather than a new long-term target. Investors will watch maintenance completion, refinery utilization and the recovery of olefin operations as indicators for the company's earnings trajectory.
Formosa Petrochemical's Business
Formosa Petrochemical operates an integrated refining and petrochemical business centered on its Mailiao complex in Taiwan. Its activities include crude processing and the production of fuel products and chemical feedstocks.
As one of Asia's larger fuel exporters, the company has a broader regional operating footprint than a narrowly focused specialty producer. Its integrated configuration links refinery output with downstream chemical operations, while exposure to commodity spreads leaves earnings sensitive to supply, demand and feedstock conditions.
Taiwan's wider market context can be followed through TAIEX market reports.
