- Hanwha Defense USA secured its first contract to build a ship for the U.S. Navy.
- Construction is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2027, with delivery planned for 2030.
- The award adds U.S. naval shipbuilding to Hanwha Aerospace's land-defense and aerospace portfolio.
Hanwha Aerospace's U.S. defense unit has been selected to build a Medium Landing Ship for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, strengthening the company's expansion from land systems and aerospace into American naval shipbuilding.
Hanwha said on November 2, 2026, that Hanwha Defense USA was chosen by TOTE Services under the Vessel Construction Manager program. The contract covers one vessel worth USD 269 million, with options for three additional ships.
First U.S. Navy shipbuilding award
Construction at Hanwha Philly Shipyard in Philadelphia is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027. The first vessel is expected to be delivered in 2030, while TOTE Services' wider program supports a planned fleet of 35 Medium Landing Ships.
The award follows Hanwha's acquisition of the Philadelphia shipyard in 2024 and its investment in the facility's workforce and technology. Hanwha Defense USA said the shipyard has already delivered four National Security Multi-Mission Vessels under the same contracting model.
Execution remains the next test
The contract adds a new U.S. growth avenue, but the commercial impact will depend on execution, future option awards and the pace of naval production. It also places greater importance on the company's ability to manage longer-cycle shipbuilding alongside its established defense programs.
That backdrop follows a difficult third quarter for the group. The Korea Times reported that Hanwha's broader portfolio spans land-based weapons, aerospace systems and naval defense, while its possible expansion of influence over Korea Aerospace Industries raises questions about competition and market concentration.
Hanwha Aerospace in competition
Hanwha Aerospace is a South Korean aerospace and defense company focused on land weapons, aircraft engines and propulsion systems, space technologies, and naval defense through its group affiliates. Its main export platforms include the K9 self-propelled howitzer and Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher.
In South Korea, Hyundai Rotem and LIG Defense & Aerospace compete in adjacent defense markets, while Korea Aerospace Industries is a direct aerospace peer. Hanwha has a broader mix of land, aerospace and naval activities than some peers, but it also faces scrutiny over potential concentration as it expands its industrial footprint.
