- Hong Leong Bank's MYR 100 million senior notes matured on November 3, 2026.
- Malaysian banks face deposit competition as loan growth outpaces deposit expansion.
- Brokerages remain constructive on the sector while warning that funding costs could delay margin recovery.
Hong Leong Bank Berhad completed the maturity of MYR 100 million in senior medium-term notes on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, according to The Star. The notes carried a 4.07 percent interest rate and were issued in 2023 as the first tranche under the bank's MYR 10 billion multi-currency medium-term notes programme.
Deposit Competition Tests Margins
The maturity comes as Malaysian lenders compete more aggressively for funding. The Star reported on November 3 that system loan growth reached 6.1 percent year on year in September, ahead of 5.2 percent deposit growth, tightening liquidity and encouraging banks to offer fixed-deposit promotions.
Higher funding costs could limit the recovery of net interest margins, according to research cited by The Star. The average lending rate rose to 4.54 percent in September from 4.50 percent in August, while elevated deposit competition is expected to persist over the medium term.
Analysts Retain Constructive Sector View
Brokerages remained constructive on Malaysian banks because of resilient balance sheets and dividend yields, although views on individual lenders differed. UOB Kay Hian Research named Hong Leong Bank among its sector picks with a MYR 24.50 target, while RHB Research retained a buy call with a MYR 26.20 target, as reported by The Star.
The maturity itself does not establish a change in earnings guidance. For investors, the more immediate issue is whether loan growth can offset the pressure that higher deposit costs place on margins.
Hong Leong's Regional Banking Model
Hong Leong Bank is a Malaysia-based regional financial services company with operations in Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia and China, according to its company profile.
