- Icelandair reported strong third-quarter operating performance despite fuel costs and industrial action.
- Management expects a difficult fourth quarter and a full-year operating loss.
- Fleet renewal and efficiency measures remain central to the companys longer-term strategy.
Icelandair reported record third-quarter revenue and a sharp improvement in operating profit on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The figures showed strong summer performance, but the airline also warned that high fuel prices and other operating pressures will weigh on the remainder of the year.
According to the Nasdaq Nordic release, revenue reached USD 655.0 million in the third quarter, 12 percent above the same period a year earlier. EBIT rose to USD 120.3 million from USD 74.4 million, lifting the EBIT margin to 18.4 percent from 12.7 percent. Net profit increased to USD 96.7 million from USD 57.3 million.
Strong summer, difficult winter outlook
Commercial performance improved as unit revenue rose 18 percent, supported by a 17 percent increase in yield and a 0.6 percentage-point improvement in load factor. The company said unit costs increased 10 percent, primarily because of higher fuel prices.
A strike led by the Association of Aircraft Maintenance Technicians reduced third-quarter EBIT by USD 4.0 million. Icelandair also said the fourth quarter would be challenging and guided to a full-year 2026 EBIT loss in a range of USD 20 million to USD 30 million.
The outlook leaves investors weighing strong revenue generation against weaker winter profitability. Management pointed to cost reduction, business simplification and efficiency measures as priorities while fuel prices and currency developments remain difficult operating factors.
Business model and competitive position
Icelandair Group is an Iceland-based airline group focused on passenger air transport, with Iceland serving as its operating base between Europe and North America. Its network strategy combines local Icelandic traffic with connecting routes through the country.
The company operates in a competitive transatlantic market alongside carriers such as PLAY, SAS and Finnair. Icelandair remains more specialized in Iceland-based North Atlantic connectivity than the larger network airlines, while the smaller PLAY competes for price-sensitive traffic on overlapping routes.
Icelandair is also preparing for fleet renewal, including the planned arrival of Airbus A321XLR aircraft, while seeking to improve efficiency and reduce exposure to operating cost pressures.
European airline shares remain sensitive to fuel prices, travel demand and capacity discipline; current market reports provide broader sector context.
Further developments on traffic, labor negotiations, fleet renewal and winter bookings may shape the next assessment of Icelandair stock.
