Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited faces a consumer ruling in Kerala after a passenger received one rupee less than the amount due on a cancelled train ticket. The Indian Express reported on October 29, 2026, that the Kasaragod District Consumer Commission ordered IRCTC to refund the shortfall with 9 percent interest, pay 100 rupees in compensation and cover 3,000 rupees in litigation costs.
Refund dispute ends in consumer order
The passenger had booked a three-tier air-conditioned ticket for 553 rupees on August 11, 2024, for travel on August 20. After cancelling on August 17, he was entitled to a refund of 341 rupees after cancellation charges and tax, but received 340 rupees.
The commission found that IRCTC had not justified the one-rupee deduction and treated the failure to return the exact amount as a deficiency in service and an unfair trade practice. The corporation must comply within 30 days of receiving the order.
Passenger services remain under scrutiny
The same report said the Ministry of Railways extended optional travel insurance to passengers buying reserved tickets at railway reservation counters from October 27. The cover can reach 1 million rupees for a premium of 45 paise, including taxes, and had previously been available for bookings through IRCTC's website and mobile app.
For investors, the ruling is a small direct financial matter but a visible reminder that transaction accuracy and customer-service controls remain relevant to IRCTC's digital booking operations. The decision does not by itself establish a material effect on earnings.
IRCTC provides online railway booking and onboard food-service support, according to its corporate website. Its customer-care notice also warns users about fraudulent groups claiming to arrange railway bookings and directs customers to official support channels.
