Madison Square Garden Sports has entered a new phase after the New York Knicks and New York Rangers were separated into two publicly traded companies. CNBC reported on October 28, 2026, that the spin-off had been completed late Monday and that Guggenheim Securities had begun coverage of both businesses.
The former MSG Sports structure was divided into MSG Knickerbockers, which retains the Knicks, and MSG Rangers. The separation gives investors a more focused way to assess the basketball and hockey franchises rather than valuing them together under one corporate structure.
Analyst sees several value paths
Guggenheim initiated coverage of MSG Rangers with a buy rating and a 278 US dollar price target. It also began coverage of MSG Knickerbockers with a buy rating and a 445 US dollar target. CNBC said analyst Curry Baker described multiple potential paths to unlock further value in both stocks.
For MSG Knickerbockers, Baker pointed to possible NBA expansion in Las Vegas and Seattle, which he estimated could generate 450 million to 700 million US dollars for the Knicks, or roughly 13 to 20 US dollars per share. He also cited possible benefits from European expansion of the league.
For MSG Rangers, the analyst highlighted greater flexibility after the separation, including the possibility of an outright sale or a minority investment. He also pointed to a possible strategic response to a US tax-code change beginning in fiscal 2028.
What the split means for investors
The completed transaction changes the basis on which investors evaluate the businesses. Separate reporting and trading may make franchise-specific performance easier to compare, but each stock will also carry its own sporting, financial and execution risks. Analyst targets are assessments, not guarantees of future returns.
