What Powertech is changing

  • Advanced packaging is becoming a larger part of Powertech Technology's business.
  • Strong utilization and customer acceptance of price increases support the near-term outlook.
  • New panel-level and stacked-chip technologies could reduce the company's exposure to memory cycles.

Powertech Technology is positioning its packaging business for stronger demand from artificial intelligence and advanced chips, according to Zero One Investment Research. The report, published on October 28, said advanced packaging accounted for 30% of revenue and that packaging and test lines were operating above 90% utilization on October 27.

Packaging demand is strengthening

Powertech Technology chairman D.K. Tsai said most customers were accepting price increases. The company also reported third-quarter gross margin of 24%, while net profit reached a quarterly record, increasing 17.7% from the previous quarter and 69.8% from a year earlier.

Logic chips represented the largest product line at 43% of revenue, followed by NAND at 28% and DRAM at 20%. The product mix gives investors a clearer view of how Powertech is broadening beyond standard DRAM and NAND packaging as demand for AI infrastructure expands.

Technology pipeline points higher

Tsai expects growth from 2027 to include fan-out panel-level packaging, 2.5D and 3D stacking, co-packaged optics and high-end flip-chip packaging. Powertech is also changing the ownership structure of its legacy China packaging operation to focus investment on Taiwan.

For investors, the key issue is whether cloud customers convert current development work into panel-level production orders. If that happens, the company's growth could become less dependent on the memory cycle, although execution and customer concentration remain important factors to monitor.
