- Higher funding expenses cut net interest income despite continued loan growth.
- Credit provisions rose sharply, leaving asset quality and recovery efforts central to earnings.
- Fee income and lower operating expenses partly offset pressure on the bank's core business.
Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank reported a sharp earnings setback in the third quarter of 2026 as higher funding costs and credit provisions outweighed stronger fee income. The Investor reported on Wednesday, October 28, that pre-tax profit fell 52 percent year on year to VND1,757 billion in Q3 2026.
Funding costs weigh on core income
Interest income increased 16.3 percent to VND18,535 billion, but interest expenses rose 66.2 percent. Net interest income therefore declined 33.6 percent to VND5,228 billion, even as customer loans reached VND700,347 billion at the end of September, up 11.8 percent from the beginning of the year.
Non-interest businesses offered a partial counterweight. Net fee and commission income climbed to VND4,255 billion from VND673 billion a year earlier, while foreign-exchange trading income reached VND711 billion. Operating expenses fell 31 percent to VND2,820 billion, lifting pre-provision operating profit by 59 percent to VND7,486 billion.
Credit risk remains the key constraint
Credit risk provisions rose 5.5-fold year on year to VND5,729 billion in the quarter. For the first nine months, provisions reached VND12,847 billion, about six times the year-earlier level, while pre-tax profit fell 46 percent to VND5,893 billion and after-tax profit dropped 51 percent to VND4,278 billion.
Asset quality added to the pressure. Sacombank's non-performing-loan ratio rose to 7.33 percent at September 30 from 6.4 percent at the beginning of the year. Although loans classified as having a risk of capital loss declined, substandard and doubtful debts increased, leaving debt recovery and future provisioning as central variables for any earnings recovery.
