Samsung Card is tightening selected customer benefits as higher funding costs weigh on South Korea's credit-card industry. Seoul Economic Daily reported on Monday, November 2, that the company reduced the interest-rate discount on new card loans to customers with credit scores above 900 to 2.53 percentage points in September, from 4.13 percentage points in December 2025.

The change raised the rate actually paid by that customer group to 12.87% in September from 10.89% in December. The report links the tighter terms to higher funding costs across the sector, with card issuers also reducing interest-free installment benefits and other marketing incentives.

Higher costs weigh on earnings

Samsung Card's cumulative interest expense for the first nine months of 2026 reached 526.9 billion won, up 21.7% from a year earlier, according to the report. The increase comes as the yield on three-year AA-plus card bonds rose to 4.298% at the end of October from 3.370% at the end of December 2025.

The development adds to pressure already visible in Samsung Card's third-quarter results. Net income fell 13.5% year on year to 139.8 billion won, while operating profit declined 12.4% to 187.1 billion won. Revenue increased 17.3% to 1.18 trillion won, but higher financing and credit-loss costs reduced the benefit of stronger transaction activity.

Competitive Korean card market

Samsung Card provides credit cards, card loans, installment finance, leasing and related consumer services in South Korea. Its offerings include personal and business cards, payment benefits, financial services and shopping partnerships, while its headquarters are in Seoul.

The company competes with other Korean card issuers including KB Kookmin Card, Lotte Card, Woori Card and BC Card. The Seoul Economic Daily report places Samsung Card within a sector where issuers are responding to rising funding costs by narrowing customer incentives and managing marketing expenses more tightly.
