- The trust will not declare an October 2026 cash distribution while excess production costs and other obligations absorb net proceeds.
- Future payouts depend on clearing the deficit, rebuilding reserves and repaying the credit line.
- August production revenue exceeded reported production costs only modestly, leaving limited room to reduce the accumulated deficit.
San Juan Basin Royalty Trust will make no cash distribution for October 2026, according to an October 20 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Trustee Argent Trust Company cited accumulated excess production costs tied to the trust's royalty interests and continued low natural gas prices. The SEC filing sets out the conditions for distributions to resume.
Costs continue to absorb proceeds
The cumulative excess production cost balance stood at USD 12.42 million gross, or USD 9.32 million net to the trust, on October 20. The net deficit declined by USD 97,836 from the previous monthly report, but Hilcorp San Juan will continue applying net proceeds against the balance.
The trust said distributions will remain suspended until future proceeds are sufficient to repay the excess production costs, replenish a USD 2 million reserve and repay principal and interest on its line of credit. No timetable for a restart was provided.
Thin operating cushion
For the August 2026 production month, Hilcorp reported USD 4.87 million of revenue from the subject interests, comprising USD 4.69 million of gas revenue and USD 180,537 of oil revenue. Production costs excluding the accumulated excess costs totaled USD 4.74 million, leaving only a narrow operating cushion before administrative expenses and financing obligations.
October administrative expenses totaled USD 80,118. A USD 80,101 draw on the credit line was used alongside USD 17 of interest income to cover those expenses, bringing outstanding principal to USD 1.16 million. Cash reserves remained at USD 3,891.
