- Management is prioritizing copolyester, functional materials, recycling solutions and pharmaceuticals.
- Recycling operations are being repositioned around integrated services for customers facing tighter environmental rules.
- SK Chemicals competes with global specialty-polymer suppliers across monomers, base resins and high-heat compounds.
SK Chemicals presented its medium- and long-term strategy at a CEO Investor Day in Seoul on October 8, 2026. MoneyToday reported on October 13 that the company is seeking growth through copolyester, functional materials and LisaCycle recycling solutions while expanding its pharmaceutical business.
Materials Strategy Moves Upmarket
Copolyester remains the central green-materials product, with applications in cosmetics and food containers, appliances, medical products and devices. Management plans to broaden applications for the material and use raw-material and content optimization to improve competitiveness.
The functional-materials division includes polyester resins and adhesives. SK Chemicals also plans to expand the use of CHDM, a key copolyester input, in specialized applications. These initiatives are intended to lift the contribution of functional materials within the materials division.
Recycling Model Seeks Profitability
LisaCycle uses depolymerization to turn waste plastics into feedstock for recycled polyester materials. The company is developing supply infrastructure through FIC, a joint venture in Weinan, China, while its SK Shantou facility is already producing recycled materials commercially.
Management is also promoting Recycle as a Service, or RaaS. The model combines material supply with supplier checks, recyclability data, evidence and certification, giving customers an integrated response to environmental compliance requirements.
Investor Focus Shifts To Execution
The strategy gives investors several execution markers: broader copolyester applications, higher-value functional materials, recycling cost control and the development of pharmaceutical products in internal medicine. The plan also links the recycling business to future operating profitability rather than treating it solely as a sustainability initiative.
Business Model And Competition
SK Chemicals is a South Korean specialty-materials and pharmaceutical group. Its portfolio includes copolyesters, CHDM monomer, functional materials, adhesives, chemical-recycling solutions and pharmaceutical products.
In PCT materials, Future Market Insights places SK Chemicals alongside Celanese and Eastman among integrated monomer and base-resin producers. Toray Industries and Mitsubishi Engineering-Plastics are identified as high-heat engineering-polyester competitors, while RTP Company and Avient focus more on specialty compounding. SK Chemicals is therefore positioned as a broadly integrated supplier with a strong specialty-materials and recycling focus.
South Korean equity markets provide the broader setting for investors following SK Chemicals, with current KOSPI market reports covering the domestic environment.
