- Tobu plans to extend the platform across railway services and station-area stores.
Tobu Railway will introduce face-recognition boarding for outbound TJ Liner trains departing Ikebukuro Station on November 5, 2026. Mobile ID World reported the rollout on October 30.
The reserved-seat paid service will let eligible passengers pass the TJ Liner entrance using facial recognition instead of showing a smartphone, IC card or paper ticket. Passengers must first register a face image with SAKULaLa, purchase a seat reservation through Tobu's ticketless booking service and link the reservation's TOBU POINT ID to their SAKULaLa account.
SAKULaLa Moves Beyond Station Gates
The launch extends a platform that Tobu and Hitachi have offered since 2024. SAKULaLa face-recognition gates are already used at parts of the Tobu network, while the same platform also supports authentication for payments and loyalty points at Tobu group stores, restaurants, hotels and sports clubs.
Tobu will open a SAKULaLa exhibition and experience corner at Tobu Department Store's Ikebukuro main store from November 1 through March 31, 2027. The company plans to expand the platform to more railway services and shops around its stations, linking transport and retail use cases.
Tobu's Rail and Service Portfolio
Tobu Railway operates a 463.3-kilometer private rail network across Tokyo and four surrounding prefectures in the Kanto region. The group also runs hotels, theme parks, golf courses, health clubs, retail operations and property businesses. Its broad Kanto footprint places it alongside private rail peers such as Seibu Holdings and Keio, while East Japan Railway serves as a larger public-rail benchmark. Tobu's mix of transport, tourism, retail and property services gives SAKULaLa potential uses beyond train access.
