Toho Bank expands renewable power use

  • The Fukushima-based lender began receiving solar-generated electricity under an off-site corporate power purchase agreement.
  • The project supports a fiscal 2040 carbon-neutrality goal and a fiscal 2030 emissions target.
  • The arrangement links local power generation with electricity consumption across Fukushima Prefecture.

Toho Bank began receiving solar-generated electricity at 28 locations in Fukushima Prefecture on November 2, 2026, under an off-site corporate power purchase agreement with Tohoku Electric. IBTimes Japan reported the arrangement on November 2.

Electricity will come from five solar plants in Fukushima with combined rated output of 648.3 kilowatts. Toshiba aggregates the generation, while Tohoku Electric supplies the power to the bank through the transmission network.

Local power deal supports climate targets

The companies expect the arrangement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 481 metric tons annually. The estimate is based on an emissions factor and describes the expected effect of the agreement rather than reductions already achieved.

Toho Bank said the purchase supports its goal of reaching carbon neutrality by fiscal 2040. The bank also targets a 60% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from fiscal 2013 levels by fiscal 2030.

Because generation and consumption both take place in Fukushima, the project is structured as a local-production, local-consumption initiative. It also uses a prefectural subsidy program supporting renewable-energy facilities that serve designated customers and contribute to regional development.

Business model and competitive setting

Toho Bank is a Japan-based commercial bank headquartered in Fukushima. Its banking operations cover savings, lending and foreign exchange, while other activities include leasing, credit cards and credit guarantees.

The lender competes in Japan's regional banking market with institutions such as Tohoku Bank, Shimizu Bank and 77 Bank. These peers serve similar regional banking needs, while Toho Bank combines core banking with adjacent financial services in its home market.
