- Third-quarter sales increased while comparable-store sales returned to positive territory.
- Lower gross margins and net income kept pressure on profitability.
- Management reaffirmed its fiscal 2026 outlook, including adjusted earnings per share of 1.90 to 2.00 US dollars.
Tractor Supply Company reported stronger sales momentum but weaker profitability for the fiscal third quarter ended September 26, 2026. In its October 22 release, the retailer said net sales rose 5.1% to 3.91 billion US dollars, while comparable-store sales increased 0.4%.
The sales improvement came as comparable performance strengthened through the quarter, moving from negative in July to modestly positive in August and further improving in September. Seasonal categories such as wildlife supplies, equine and livestock, and truck, tool and hardware performed well, while big-ticket and companion-animal categories remained softer.
Margins remain the key issue
Profitability moved in the opposite direction. Gross margin declined to 36.4% from 37.4% a year earlier, which the company attributed mainly to higher transportation and fuel costs and investments in its price-value position. Operating income fell 10.2% to 307.7 million US dollars, while net income dropped 13.3% to 224.7 million US dollars. Diluted earnings per share declined to 0.43 US dollars from 0.49 US dollars.
Tractor Supply reaffirmed its fiscal 2026 outlook. The company continues to expect net sales growth of 2.5% to 3.5%, comparable-store sales between negative 1% and flat, and an adjusted operating margin of 8.5% to 8.8%. Adjusted diluted earnings per share are expected in a range of 1.90 to 2.00 US dollars. The guidance excludes Petsense impairment and VIP Petcare acquisition costs.
The real-time quote of Tractor Supply stock was 30.42 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:00 p.m. Berlin time on Friday, October 30.
