- Third-quarter same-facility surgeries declined 0.7 percent year over year, while acute-care volumes increased 4.3 percent.
- Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center is now expected to reach break-even in the first half of 2027.
- UHS expects combined 2026 losses of 80 million to 100 million dollars from several newer or disrupted facilities.
Universal Health Services expects its 2026 results to land toward the lower end of its guidance range after a weaker surgical mix and slower progress at newer hospitals weighed on third-quarter earnings. Healthcare Dive reported the development on October 29, 2026.
Pressure on earnings despite demand
UHS reported about 308 million dollars of third-quarter net income, approximately 17 percent below the prior-year period, while revenue increased by more than 5 percent to about 4.7 billion dollars. Same-facility surgeries declined 0.7 percent year over year, even as acute-care volumes increased 4.3 percent.
The changing service mix matters because medical admissions outpaced surgical cases, reducing revenue per admission. Management also cited slower-than-expected ramps at newer hospitals and continued pressure from uninsured patients formerly covered through Affordable Care Act exchanges.
New facilities remain a key swing factor
Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center in Washington, D.C., is now expected to break even in the first half of 2027, later than previously expected. The Palm Beach Gardens hospital opened in May and remained in the early stages of building volumes, while a behavioral-health facility in San Antonio lost its Medicare certification.
UHS expects the combined operating losses from Cedar Hill, Palm Beach Gardens and the San Antonio facility to total 80 million to 100 million dollars in 2026. The pace of improvement at those facilities will be important for margins as the company moves into 2027.
Business mix shapes competition
Universal Health Services operates acute-care hospitals, behavioral-health facilities, emergency departments and outpatient facilities across the United States, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom, and also provides health plans and physician-management services. The company is headquartered in the United States. Its inpatient-heavy acute-care portfolio and large behavioral-health network place it in the same hospital-services field as HCA Healthcare and Tenet Healthcare, while its behavioral-health concentration gives it a more specialized mix than general hospital operators.
