- Korea Zinc said Young Poong should address a renewed environmental investigation linked to its Seokpo Smelter.
- Young Poong and MBK Partners separately demanded answers from Korea Zinc Chairman Choi Yun-beom over disputed investment transactions.
- The companies remain locked in a prolonged contest for control of Korea Zinc.
Korea Zinc renewed its public criticism of Young Poong on Tuesday, November 3, saying the shareholder alliance with MBK Partners should address controversies surrounding its own businesses before challenging Korea Zinc's investments. The statement adds a new legal and environmental dimension to the continuing control dispute.
According to The Asia Business Daily, Korea Zinc cited a police reinvestigation involving Jang Hyung-jin, an adviser to the Young Poong Group. The investigation concerns allegations that Young Poong's Seokpo Smelter contaminated the Nakdong River with heavy metals. The matter was reportedly reopened after a review by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and transferred to a metropolitan investigation unit.
Allegations remain contested
Korea Zinc said Young Poong should provide a responsible explanation of the environmental issues rather than focus on allegations against another company. It also rejected claims by Young Poong and MBK that investment transactions involving a Korea Zinc-backed fund created conflicts of interest. Korea Zinc said the transactions were conducted by separate legal entities and should not be presented as established wrongdoing without objective support.
Earlier on November 3, Young Poong and MBK called on Korea Zinc Chairman Choi Yun-beom to respond personally to allegations involving company funds and investments in four unlisted entertainment companies. They said the transactions raised potential conflict-of-interest concerns. Korea Zinc has disputed that interpretation.
Business and competitive position
Young Poong is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, and operates in the non-ferrous metals industry, according to MarketWatch. Its Seokpo Smelter in Bonghwa County is a central operating site named in the current dispute. Korea Zinc is the principal named industry counterpart in the companies' control contest, leaving Young Poong positioned as a major shareholder and challenger in the Korean non-ferrous metals sector.
