2020 Bulkers Docks as a $4 Million Shell With Himalaya Steering the Search for a Second Act

Oslo-listed 2020 Bulkers sold all Newcastlemax bulkers, booked $154M profit, paid $316M dividend, and now holds ~$4M cash with Himalaya Shipping as majority owner seeking new projects.

A company that once ran six Newcastlemax bulkers now sits with roughly $4 million in cash, a stock that swings nearly 170% a year, and a new majority owner hunting for a fresh business plan. 2020 Bulkers has turned its back on shipping entirely, and the market is pricing in equal measures of hope and confusion.

The transformation was brutal and swift. During the first quarter of 2026, the Oslo-listed company sold its entire fleet, booking a net profit of $154.1 million – almost entirely from vessel disposal gains. Five ships changed hands in March, while the last, the Bulk Sandefjord, followed in April. The Bulk Sao Paulo alone fetched $72.75 million, and the pair Bulk Sydney and Bulk Santos together brought in $145.5 million. Shareholders collected a special dividend of $13.80 per share on 8 May, totalling roughly $316 million. What remains is a lean balance sheet: enough cash to keep the listing alive and pay management, but not much more.

Behind the scenes, the ownership structure has already been redrawn. In February, 2020 Bulkers sold 14% of its management company to Himalaya Shipping and 36% to Bruton Limited for a combined 4 million NOK, a deal that became effective on 1 April. Since then, Himalaya has increased its grip, now holding a 54% majority stake in 2020 Bulkers Management AS. The message from the boardroom is clear: the operating chapter is closed, and the search for value-creating projects is under way. No specific acquisition targets have been named.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying 2020 Bulkers?

The dry bulk market is offering a mixed backdrop for any potential return to shipping. The Baltic Dry Bulk Freight Index slumped for four consecutive sessions, losing 2.5% to sit at 3,124 points, with the broader Capesize index falling 3.8% to 5,253 points. Yet the Baltic Capesize Index – a more specific measure – still stands at 4,282 points, and daily earnings for Capesize vessels have climbed to $35,333. The contradiction reflects the underlying trend: strong Atlantic fixing activity has tightened tonnage supply, but a wave of newbuildings, about 40 million deadweight tonnes expected in 2026, threatens to cap rates. The Simandou iron ore project in West Africa could provide a demand lift later this year, but it will arrive too late for a company that no longer owns a single vessel.

The stock has reflected the uncertainty. Over the past seven days, shares have lost about 16.4%, slipping to 4.26 Norwegian kroner. The relative strength index has dropped to 25.9, a deeply oversold reading that, given the near-170% annualised volatility, offers little reassurance. Technical signals are largely meaningless when the underlying asset is a shell waiting for a new identity.

Expectations now centre on the annual general meeting scheduled for August 2026, when management is expected to present more concrete plans. Until then, the stock is trading largely on the residual cash backing and on speculation that the clean listing shell can be recycled into something else. Any hint of a deal could send the shares sharply higher – or confirm that the best days are behind them.
