After selling all six bulk carriers, 2020 Bulkers paid a $14.05/share dividend, leaving $4M cash. The stock lost over half its value in 30 days, now trades as a shell awaiting a new deal.

The numbers that 2020 Bulkers reported on 13 May look like a blowout — $154.1 million in net profit and $157.3 million in EBITDA. But the source of that windfall was not operational strength. It was the final act of a liquidation that has left the company with no ships, no fleet income, and just $4 million in cash.

Shareholders have already felt the sting. After the stock went ex-dividend in late April, the price shed more than half its value on a month-over-month basis. The bounce on the final trading day of the week — a 13.28% climb to 5.32 Norwegian kroner — was small comfort against a 30-day loss of 54.96%. With annualized volatility at nearly 148%, the market is pricing in anything but calm.

The company spent the first quarter offloading its entire fleet of six Newcastlemax bulk carriers. Vessels were handed over to new owners through March and April, generating average time-charter earnings of roughly $26,700 per day during the period leading up to delivery. The subsequent sales pumped that $154.1 million profit figure. Net equity at 31 March stood at $292.0 million while total liabilities fell to $24.5 million, mostly reflecting the repayment of credit lines tied to the ships.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying 2020 Bulkers?

A staggering chunk of that cash flow went straight back to investors. 2020 Bulkers paid a special dividend of $14.05 per share. Separately, it bought back 2,791,163 of its own shares at 129.5 kroner apiece in April, a move consistent with winding down the old structure. After the payouts, the corporate till holds barely $4 million — a thin cushion for any future pivot.

Management itself has changed shape. In February, 2020 Bulkers agreed to sell stakes in its own operating company to Himalaya Shipping and Bruton Limited. The transactions took effect on 1 April and brought in 4 million kroner. The result is a publicly listed shell with a board, a listing, and a residual pot of capital, but no operating business to speak of.

Returning to the dry-bulk sector would not be straightforward. Analysts expect newbuilding deliveries this year to add 40 million deadweight tonnes of capacity, a supply glut that keeps freight rates under pressure. Geopolitical distortions complicate the picture further: roughly 210 vessels are stuck in the Strait of Hormuz area, while a potential reopening of the Red Sea route could shorten voyage distances and soften demand for tonnage.

For now, 2020 Bulkers exists as a platform for the next transaction. The infrastructure — exchange listing, management team, and a small war chest — remains intact. The strategic direction chosen by the board will determine whether the money flows back into shipping or into an entirely different industry. Until that decision is made, the stock trades as a call option on whatever deal the executive team can negotiate next.
