AI Software Sector Does a U-Turn: ServiceNow Jumps 22% on Governance Thesis

ServiceNow shares jumped 14.4% in a single day, capping a 22% weekly gain, as Dell's AI server surge sparked sector-wide revaluation of enterprise AI orchestration.

The week that began with ServiceNow shares languishing near $100 ended in a blaze of buying that lifted the stock by 14.4% on Friday alone to $124.37. Trading volume exploded to roughly 45 million shares, dwarfing the weekly average, as investors collectively rewrote the script for enterprise artificial intelligence. The move capped a weekly gain of nearly 22% and marked a complete reversal from the gloom that had gripped the stock since April.

The trigger came not from ServiceNow itself but from Dell Technologies, which reported an 88% revenue surge to $43.84 billion and a staggering 757% jump in its AI server business. That sparked a sector-wide revaluation: instead of fearing that AI agents would cannibalise traditional software, the market suddenly embraced the idea that AI needs orchestration, governance and workflow management — precisely what ServiceNow's platform delivers. The same narrative that had punished ServiceNow for weeks was turned on its head.

The turnaround was dramatic by any measure. After hitting an intraday low near $100 on Tuesday, the stock clawed back ground through the week before Friday's decisive breakout. The close at $124.37 left the shares roughly 41% higher for the month of May, undoing most of the 17.8% plunge suffered on a single day in April when they touched $88. Investors who bought the dip are sitting on substantial gains.

The rally has fundamental support. First-quarter results showed subscription revenue climbing 22% to $3.67 billion, with total revenue reaching $3.77 billion at the same growth rate. Subscription-related remaining performance obligations (cRPO), a key forward-looking metric, stood at $12.64 billion, while total remaining performance obligations hit $27.7 billion — an increase of 25% from a year earlier. Management guided for full-year subscription revenue of $15.735 billion to $15.775 billion, implying growth of 22% to 22.5%. The operating margin is expected at 31.5%, with free-cash-flow margin at 35%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

The picture is not entirely without clouds. Delayed enterprise deals in the Middle East cost the company roughly 75 basis points of growth in the quarter, and the integration of recently acquired Armis continues to weigh on margins. For now, however, investors appear willing to look past these headwinds, betting that the AI governance opportunity dwarfs any short-term friction.

A trio of partnership announcements reinforced the thesis. Wipro expanded its collaboration with ServiceNow to deploy AI-driven workflows across IT, human resources, procurement and cybersecurity. Days earlier, Boomi announced an alliance aimed at making enterprise data more accessible to AI agents, while Experian linked its data platform to ServiceNow for use cases such as employee onboarding and risk management. The deals underscore the breadth of the platform’s appeal.

Technically, the stock has cleared an important hurdle. Friday's close sits virtually on the 200-day moving average of $123.73, a widely watched long-term trend indicator. The next resistance is near $132, a level flagged by analysts and reinforced by the daily high of $124.55. On the downside, support is at $105 and, nearer term, at $116.29. Bank of America has set a price target of $130 with a Buy rating, citing the AI strategy as a clear growth driver.

ServiceNow at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The coming week will test whether the rally has legs. ServiceNow is scheduled to appear at investor conferences hosted by William Blair, Bank of America and Evercore in early June, giving management a platform to flesh out its AI monetisation story. If the narrative shift holds, the stock may well target the $130 resistance zone.
