The sharp correction in Aixtron shares has drawn its first analyst rating change in months, with mwb research lifting the stock from "Sell" to "HOLD" on 20 July. The upgrade comes as the MOCVD equipment maker’s equity has shed over 33% in the past 30 days, landing around €39.50 — a far cry from the 52-week high of €62.68 set as recently as 18 June. The relative strength index of 34.1 points to an oversold condition, a technical backdrop that the analyst house cited alongside the recent price pullback as justification for the revised stance.

While the share price has cooled dramatically, Aixtron has been quietly building a string of new customer wins. Japanese chipmaker ROHM Semiconductor selected the G10-GaN platform for its gallium-nitride power device expansion on 8 June. Less than three weeks later, MIT Lincoln Laboratory bought two 300?mm Hyperion systems to advance research into gallium?nitride and 2D materials. And in May, Lumentum ordered multiple G10?AsP MOCVD systems to boost high?speed optical solutions for AI networks. These orders cut across industrial power electronics, defence?linked research and optical data transmission — three separate growth vectors that give the order book a broad base.

The operational narrative is reinforced by financial results and forward guidance. For the 2025 financial year, Aixtron reported a gross margin of 40%, down slightly from 41% a year earlier, while reining in R&D spending to €81.1 million from €91.4 million. More importantly, management raised its full?year 2026 outlook on 14 April, now targeting revenue of €530 million to €590 million and an EBIT margin of 17% to 20%. To underpin that ambition, the company placed €450 million in convertible bonds in April, and the annual general meeting in May approved a €0.15 per share dividend for 2025.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

All eyes now turn to 30 July, when Aixtron publishes its half?year report and hosts an analyst conference call. The key question is whether the recent order flow has already started to convert into top?line figures or will only feed through in the second half. Investors will also scrutinise whether the April guidance — raised before the stock began its steep descent — remains achievable. A separate voting rights notification early July, filed under Section 40 of the German Securities Trading Act, added an extra layer of interest, though specific threshold changes were not disclosed.

For now, the mwb research move is not a buy signal but an acknowledgment that the correction has already happened. The stock still trades 37% below its June peak, yet over a 12?month horizon it remains up 142%. Whether the oversold condition translates into a sustainable floor depends on whether the half?year numbers validate the strong order momentum and the raised targets — or reveal a gap between bookings and revenue that the market has already begun to price in.
