Aixtron shares plunge 34% in a month, but Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan boost stakes to over 8% and 7% respectively, while put options hint at further downside ahead of half-year results.

Aixtron’s share price has lurched into a deep correction, shedding more than a third of its value over the past month, yet two of Wall Street’s biggest names have seized the moment to increase their exposure to the German chip-equipment maker. The buying spree from Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan comes against a backdrop of extraordinary volatility and a tell-tale signal from the options market that some traders are bracing for further losses.

The stock closed last week at €39.43, a decline of 33.69% on a monthly basis. That puts it €23.25 — or 37% — below the record high of €62.68 reached on June 18. The 14-day relative strength index stands at 34.1, hovering just above the oversold threshold but not yet flashing an extreme reading. Annualised volatility has surged to 78.58%, a level that reflects the heightened uncertainty surrounding the name.

JPMorgan, which shuffled its Aixtron stake multiple times in the space of a few days between July 8 and 10, ultimately disclosed a voting-rights position of roughly 7.3%. The pattern — an increase, a decrease, then another increase — is unusual and points to the difficulty institutional investors face in pricing the stock after the sell-off. Goldman Sachs, meanwhile, reported on July 14 that its total interest had risen to 8.28%, comprising 3.42% in directly held shares and 4.86% through financial instruments. Both announcements landed during a period of heavy selling pressure, suggesting the banks view the lower price as a buying opportunity rather than a reason to flee.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

Options activity adds a more cautious note. A put option with a strike price of €37, launched in late June, has gained significant value as the underlying stock fell. Such derivatives pay out when the share price drops, and their rising premium indicates that some market participants are hedging, or betting, on further downside. The combination of institutional accumulation and put-market skepticism sets up a tense standoff ahead of the company’s half-year results.

Supporters of the stock point to a potential catalyst in the optoelectronics segment. Market reports from early July suggested that order intake in that division could jump by as much as 50%, driven by demand for MOCVD systems used to manufacture components for AI data centres. That narrative appears to have reinforced the buying decisions at Goldman and JPMorgan, even as the broader semi-equipment sector has cooled.

All eyes now turn to July 30, when Aixtron will publish its interim report for the first half of 2026 and host a conference call with analysts. Management’s full-year guidance calls for revenue of roughly €560 million, with a tolerance band of €30 million in either direction, and an EBIT margin between 17% and 20%. The first quarter ended with negative operating earnings, so the second quarter’s contribution will be critical. If the promised optoelectronics uplift has translated into firm orders and a healthier income statement, the bulls who followed the banks into the stock may be vindicated. If not, the put-option pessimists could have their day.
