Shares in German insurance giant Allianz reached a new peak of €394.80 on Wednesday, trading within striking distance of its all-time high of €396.21. This surge comes as the company approaches a pivotal fortnight in May, packed with a shareholder meeting, a historic leadership change, and first-quarter results.

A significant driver of the share price strength is an ongoing share buyback program. Since its launch on March 13, Allianz has repurchased approximately 1.14 million of its own shares, including an additional 101,388 between April 7 and 10. The program, which runs until the end of 2026, is authorized to spend up to €2.5 billion. All acquired shares will be cancelled, thereby increasing the earnings per share for remaining investors.

The company's operational performance provides a solid foundation. For the 2025 financial year, Allianz reported an eight percent rise in operating profit to €17.4 billion, hitting the upper end of its target range. Its Solvency II capital ratio remains robust at 218 percent. Management has set a similar target of around €17.4 billion for 2026.

Shareholders have more immediate returns to anticipate. The ex-dividend date is set for May 8, with the payout following on May 12. The dividend per share is rising from €15.40 to €17.10.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Allianz?

The Annual General Meeting on May 7 will mark the end of an era, as supervisory board chairman Michael Diekmann steps down. His proposed successor is Jörg Schneider, the former CFO of Munich Re. This appointment is notable as it will be the first time the role is not filled by a former Allianz executive board member.

The meeting's agenda also includes a reform of executive compensation rules. A new clause will withhold variable pay if Allianz shares underperform the European sector index by more than 25 percentage points over a four-year period, a stricter threshold than the previous 50-point tolerance. The annual bonus will be split evenly, with 40% tied to operating profit and another 40% linked to shareholder returns.

Beyond internal governance, Allianz is seen as a major beneficiary of recent German pension reform. Legislation passed by the Bundestag in late March introduces a one percent annual fee cap on new standard pension products from 2027. Analysts believe this regulatory shift favors large, efficient providers like Allianz, potentially pressuring competitors with costlier, commission-driven structures. Berenberg analyst Michael Huttner maintains a 'Buy' rating on the stock with a price target of €504, citing the company as the reform's biggest winner.

Allianz at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The first major test of the current year arrives shortly after the AGM, with the release of Q1 figures on May 13. A key area of focus will be the performance of its credit insurance subsidiary, Allianz Trade. The unit has warned of a further increase in global corporate insolvencies this year, following a noticeable rise in 2025. The upcoming report will provide crucial data on the impact of these defaults.
