At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Amazon unveiled a dual-pronged strategy that signals a significant evolution for its flagship assistant. The company is pushing Alexa beyond its voice-controlled roots, positioning it as a direct competitor to text-based generative AI tools like ChatGPT. This move places the tech giant's substantial artificial intelligence investments under fresh scrutiny from investors.

Market experts are divided on the stock's valuation following the announcements. Analysts at Cantor Fitzgerald maintained their "Overweight" recommendation but implemented a sharp reduction in their price target, cutting it to $260 from a previous $315. They cited a general sector re-rating as the reason, despite acknowledging Amazon's solid underlying business fundamentals.

In contrast, Bank of America maintained a more bullish stance. The firm's analyst, Justin Post, reaffirmed a price objective of $303, pointing to an accelerating revenue trend at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and a robust operating margin of approximately 36.9%. This figure represents an expansion of over six percentage points within a year.

Expanding Alexa's Ecosystem and Leadership

The centerpiece of Amazon's CES presentation was Alexa+, a new iteration designed to function as a browser-based web assistant. This expansion marks the company's formal entry into the competitive generative AI tool market, moving Alexa from a primarily voice-activated home device to a versatile web utility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Amazon?

The launch was accompanied by new hardware, including the Ember Artline TV series—a matte 4K QLED television starting at $899 aimed at competing with Samsung's "The Frame." Amazon also introduced updates for its "Bee" wearable and a redesigned Fire TV interface.

Strengthening its content division, Amazon MGM Studios appointed Jenn Levy, a former Netflix executive behind hits like "Love is Blind," to lead its Unscripted TV segment. Her tenure begins on January 20.

The Profitability Test for AI Spending

The mixed analyst reactions highlight a core debate on Wall Street: are Amazon's multi-billion dollar investments in data centers and AI models—such as Olympus and Alexa+—beginning to yield a measurable financial return? Following a relatively modest annual share price gain of around 5% last year, CEO Andy Jassy faces pressure to demonstrate the profitability of this aggressive AI push.

The upcoming quarterly report, due in late January, is expected to provide critical evidence. Investors will closely monitor user adoption metrics for Alexa+ and margin progression within the retail division. From a technical chart perspective, the equity is currently trading in a range between $239 and $245. A sustained breakout above $247 is viewed by traders as the next key level needed to signal further upward momentum.
