AMD Stock Surges 153% in 2025: Analyst Targets vs Market Momentum

A curious tension is playing out in AMD’s stock. The chipmaker has surged 153% since the start of the year, leaving its shares at €483.05 as of Monday’s close — a price that now sits nearly 97% above the 200-day moving average of €245.68. Yet Wall Street’s average price target of €445.37 implies the stock is already overvalued by about 7.8%. That gap between market momentum and analyst caution has become the central debate for investors watching the company’s next move.

The rally has a clear catalyst. Nvidia’s “Kyber” platform, NVL144, is reportedly delayed by more than twelve months, creating a rare opening in the hyperscaler data-center market. AMD is rushing to fill that void. Hyperscalers including Meta and OpenAI are said to be preparing massive orders for AMD’s Instinct accelerators, driven not just by supply constraints at the rival but by a broader strategic shift: cloud giants are determined to reduce their dependence on a single chip architecture. AMD’s EPYC server processors and Instinct lineup are direct beneficiaries of this push toward “sovereign AI infrastructure.”

The data-center momentum is already showing up in the numbers. In the first quarter of 2026, revenue from data-center products climbed 57% year over year. Management expects that growth trajectory to gain further visibility as new hardware platforms roll out more broadly in the second half of the year. That sustained demand is what has propelled AMD’s market capitalization toward the trillion-dollar threshold — a milestone that seemed distant just twelve months ago, when the stock was trading at roughly a quarter of its current level.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?

But the AI narrative is not the only engine. Recent hardware surveys from June show AMD chipping away at Intel’s dominance in desktop CPUs, particularly among Windows 11 users who have crossed a key adoption threshold. The Ryzen AI series, which packs specialized circuitry for local AI processing, is the spearhead of that push. By carving out a position in the emerging “AI PC” category, AMD is diversifying its revenue base beyond the data center while putting direct pressure on its longtime rival in the PC market.

Despite the stock’s blistering run, short-term volatility remains part of the picture. The shares slipped 5% over the past seven days, and the 14-day relative strength index of 57.7 signals neutral-to-mild bullish momentum rather than overbought conditions — suggesting there is room for further upside even after a move that has left the stock trading 17.5% above its 50-day average of €411.26. Still, the annualized volatility of 75.3% is a reminder that this rally has come with sharp swings.

All eyes are now on July’s “Advancing AI 2026” conference, where AMD is expected to detail the MI400 roadmap and solidify its partnership with Turing in autonomous driving. Analysts also anticipate updates on recently acquired memory-optimization technologies designed to alleviate bottlenecks in high-performance data centers. These announcements will test whether AMD can convert the temporary opening created by Nvidia’s delay into lasting market share.

The August second-quarter earnings report will provide the first real verdict on that execution challenge. For now, the stock sits just 5.6% below its 52-week high of €511.70, pricing in a future that has not yet arrived. Whether AMD can deliver the hardware that the market has already discounted will determine if this rally is a foundation for something larger — or a case of expectations running ahead of reality.
