Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust found itself in an unusual tug-of-war last week. On one hand, a confidential IPO filing by its portfolio company Anthropic triggered a sharp upward revision in the fund’s net asset value, while a timely share placement at a premium underscored strong institutional demand. On the other, the market punished the stock, sending it to a weekly loss of more than 5% as profit-takers moved in.

The catalyst came mid-week when the trust disclosed that it had revalued a large private holding — understood to be its stake in the OpenAI rival Anthropic, which recently submitted confidential paperwork for a US listing. That position now accounts for 21% of total assets, up from roughly 18% at the end of April, according to the latest data. The adjustment lifted the official net asset value to around 1,500 pence per share. Anthropic alone represents about 2.6% of the portfolio, a figure that could rise further once the IPO pricing is finalised. Around 40% of the fund’s assets remain in private companies, leaving ample room for similar NAV swings.

Premium placement signals confidence

The stronger NAV attracted immediate interest from large investors. Scottish Mortgage’s management took advantage of the demand by placing 3.85 million treasury shares at roughly 1,545 pence each — a premium to the underlying asset value. The move allows the trust to expand its capital base without being forced to sell any of its core holdings, a tactic that existing shareholders typically welcome as a sign of disciplined capital management.

Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management also increased its voting rights in the trust to above 3% during the week, reinforcing the theme of institutional accumulation.

Market takes a different view

Despite these bullish fundamentals, Friday brought a sharp reversal. The stock tumbled 3.88% on German exchanges to close at €17.10, pushing the weekly decline to just over 5%. Retail investors, however, saw the dip as an opportunity: on major trading platforms, buy orders accounted for nearly 60% of the volume on Friday morning.

The divergence between the fund’s improving net asset value and its falling share price highlights the persistent discount or premium gap that investors watch closely. In recent weeks the shares had traded at a modest premium to NAV; should the market slide continue, that premium could quickly turn into a discount, particularly if the share price drifts toward the key support levels.

Technicals hold, but focus shifts to pricing

From a chart perspective, the stock still enjoys a solid foundation. The 50-day moving average at €16.57 provides a first line of defence, while the 2025 high of €19.50 marks the next resistance. Year-to-date, the shares remain up roughly 23%, underscoring the strong run that preceded last week’s pullback.

Scottish Mortgage Investment at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Looking ahead, the next catalyst will be the official pricing of Anthropic’s IPO. Once the issue price is set, Scottish Mortgage will be obliged to update its net asset value again, potentially triggering another round of revaluation gains — or losses, depending on the market’s reception of the listing. For now, the market is choosing to wait and see, leaving the stock caught between two powerful forces: a rising NAV and a fickle mood among short-term traders.
