Bayer’s share price slipped for a second straight session on Wednesday, closing at €46.61 — a drop of 2.04% — even as the German conglomerate unveiled a pair of strategic initiatives and quietly backed down from a controversial trade dispute. The stock now sits 13.46% below its 52-week high of €53.86, hit in early July, though it remains up more than 26% since the start of the year.

The day’s most telling move came not from a new partnership, but from an abandoned one. Bayer’s subsidiary Ruveon, the former Monsanto unit, withdrew its petition at the U.S. International Trade Commission seeking anti-dumping duties of up to 446% on Chinese glyphosate imports. The retreat followed fierce opposition from the National Corn Growers Association and the American Soybean Association, who warned that such tariffs would hammer U.S. farmers already grappling with tight margins. Bayer cited its commitment to the agricultural community as the reason for pulling the application on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The episode underscores Bayer’s delicate balancing act: it needs to protect its glyphosate supply chain, but it cannot afford to alienate the very farmers who buy its seeds and crop protection products. The withdrawal averts what could have become a damaging trade conflict with its core customer base.

On the oncology front, Bayer announced a clinical collaboration with U.S. biotech Kairos Pharma. The pair will test Bayer’s approved radiopharmaceutical Xofigo in combination with Kairos’ antibody ENV-105 in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who also have bone metastases. ENV-105 targets the CD105/BMP signaling pathway, which is believed to drive resistance to existing cancer therapies. Bayer hopes the combination will improve outcomes in a form of the disease that has proven difficult to treat.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bayer?

Separately, Bayer’s Crop Science division is pushing into biofuels. The company has acquired the intellectual property rights from Smart Earth Camelina, a specialist in the oilseed crop camelina, and is scaling up its cultivation across North America alongside BP. The oil from camelina, marketed under the newgold brand, serves as a feedstock for sustainable aviation fuel and biodiesel. For Bayer, the move represents a step beyond its traditional crop protection business, leveraging its plant breeding expertise while BP handles processing and distribution.

Market observers largely attributed Wednesday’s share decline to profit-taking after the sharp rally that followed the U.S. Supreme Court’s favorable ruling on glyphosate liability in late June. Despite the pullback, the stock still trades roughly 11% above its 50-day moving average, suggesting the medium-term uptrend remains intact.

Two key dates now loom. On August 4, Bayer will report second-quarter results, with investors focused on free cash flow, which has been squeezed by hefty provisions for U.S. litigation. On August 19, a court hearing in Missouri will address a potential nationwide class-action settlement for Roundup claims. Buoyed by the Supreme Court’s decision, that hearing could pave the way for a broader resolution of Bayer’s legal overhang.

Bayer at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

In a separate development confirmed on July 10, Bayer finalized an agreement with Apollo Global Management, which is investing €3 billion for a minority stake in a new entity housing Bayer’s long-acting contraceptive business. Bayer retains majority control and full operational oversight, with the fresh capital earmarked for debt reduction and upcoming bond maturities.
