Bloom Energy’s Record Run Sparks a Battle Between Momentum and Math

Bloom Energy shares surged on strong Q1 earnings but face extreme volatility, a forward P/E of 158.7, and insider selling as valuation diverges from operations.

The stock hit a fresh 52-week high of $307.60 on Thursday before reversing sharply to close down more than 9%. For Bloom Energy, that kind of whiplash is becoming the norm. The fuel-cell maker has seen its shares multiply since the start of the year, but the rally has opened a chasm between what the company is delivering operationally and what the market is willing to pay.

The Numbers Behind the Surge

The catalyst was a blockbuster first-quarter earnings report released on April 28. Revenue surged 130% to $751 million, with product revenue jumping more than 200%. Bloom swung to a GAAP net profit of $70.7 million — a stark contrast to the loss it posted in the same period last year. The company also generated positive operating cash flow in a first quarter for the first time in its history.

Management responded by lifting its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $3.4 billion to $3.8 billion, representing growth of roughly 80% from the prior year. The non-GAAP gross margin is expected to improve to about 34%, up from 31.5% in the first quarter. Adjusted EBITDA hit $143 million in the period, and Bloom ended the quarter with $2.52 billion in cash.

Beyond the Oracle Hype

While the partnership with Oracle dominates headlines, the company’s order book tells a broader story. More than half of Bloom’s data-center backlog now comes from other hyperscalers, neo-cloud providers and colocation operators — including AWS and Coralogix. CEO K.R. Sridhar has emphasized that these projects are designed to run without grid connections, diesel generators or battery storage.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Bloom Energy?

The company’s total order backlog stands at $20 billion, with 398 net new orders added in the quarter. Sridhar said there are no bottlenecks in either order intake or production. Bloom’s existing manufacturing facilities can deliver up to 5 gigawatts of annual capacity, and the company is expanding in increments of several hundred megawatts per quarter — scaling on demand rather than in large, risky leaps.

The Valuation Riddle

The stock’s meteoric rise has pushed its forward price-to-earnings ratio to 158.7. For context, Nvidia trades at roughly 26.2. Bloom’s beta of 3.2 underscores just how volatile the shares have become. About 9% of the float was sold short as of mid-April, suggesting that a short squeeze has amplified the rally.

Analyst price targets are all over the map. The median target sits at roughly $223 — about 23% below the current trading level. One valuation model flags the stock as massively overbought, while a discounted cash-flow analysis from Simply Wall St pegs fair value at $375.59, implying further upside.

Insider Moves and Execution Risks

Chief Legal Officer Shawn Soderberg sold 35,000 shares in late April, netting roughly $9.8 million. The sale was conducted under a pre-arranged trading plan, but it adds to the narrative of insiders taking profits at elevated levels.

Bloom Energy at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The bigger risk may be operational. Bloom is doubling its manufacturing capacity within a single year — a scale-up it has never attempted before. Supply-chain disruptions or staffing shortages could throw the timeline off. Longer term, the company faces potential headwinds from small modular nuclear reactors or faster grid-connection projects, either of which could erode the urgency advantage Bloom currently enjoys with data-center customers.

For now, the order book provides a multi-year growth cushion. The next quarterly report is due on July 30, and investors will be watching closely for new large-scale contracts that can justify the premium the market is demanding. Until then, the debate between momentum and math shows no signs of cooling.
