Chinese automaker BYD is firing on multiple fronts, from dominating European plug-in hybrid charts to unveiling a luxury sedan that can travel over 1,000 kilometres on a single charge. Yet for investors, the stock’s trajectory remains a study in contrasts — operational momentum colliding with geopolitical uncertainty and a home market that refuses to let up on price pressure.

The company’s Seal U and Atto 2 models, alongside the Jaecoo 7, topped European PHEV sales in the first half of 2026, according to InsideEVs. The Volkswagen Tiguan, previously the segment leader, slipped to fourth place. Chinese brands now command 28.3% of Europe’s plug-in hybrid market, with all Chinese manufacturers collectively selling roughly 686,000 vehicles across the continent — a 9.5% market share. The European Union is reportedly weighing additional import duties, a prospect that Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume has publicly endorsed.

BYD’s Frankfurt-listed shares traded at €9.95 on Monday, gaining 1.92%, but remain 30.18% below the 52-week high of €14.25 set in July 2025. Over the past 30 days, however, the stock has rallied nearly 20%, recovering from a deeper trough. The gap between the recent recovery and the year’s peak reflects the market’s ongoing assessment of BYD’s operational wins against the risk of new trade barriers.

A Dividend Arrives as a Flagship Prepares to Debut

Shareholders have a concrete payout to look forward to. BYD will distribute a final dividend of 0.358 renminbi per share for the 2025 fiscal year on 31 July 2026, payable to investors who were on the register as of 18 June. Recipients can choose between renminbi or Hong Kong dollars. The ex-dividend date was 11 June, with books closed from 15 to 18 June.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

The dividend lands just weeks before BYD unveils its most ambitious passenger car yet. The Da Han, a full-size luxury sedan in the D-segment, will make its public debut at the Chengdu Auto Show from 21 to 30 August in Sichuan province. Design sketches released on Weibo show a low, wide silhouette that BYD’s sales chief Lu Tian describes as “sharpness in stillness” — a luxury statement built on restraint rather than ornamentation.

The Da Han sits above the existing Han sedan and represents BYD’s most determined push into premium territory. The battery-electric single-motor version delivers 370 kW and achieves up to 1,008 kilometres on China’s CLTC cycle. The all-wheel-drive variant, combining a 200 kW front motor with a 370 kW rear unit, manages 880 kilometres. A plug-in hybrid option, equipped with a 54.489 kWh battery, offers 370 kilometres of electric-only range. All three versions use BYD’s lithium-iron-phosphate Blade Battery technology.

The Da Han follows the Da Tang SUV, which launched in June priced between 239,900 and 309,900 yuan and claims up to 950 kilometres of range. Together, the two models aim to establish BYD’s Dynasty series as a credible player in the premium segment.

Record Speed, Australian Growth, and a Hungarian Subsidy Controversy

Beyond the showroom floor, BYD continues to push technical boundaries. The track edition of its Yangwang U9 supercar hit 472.41 km/h on the ATP Papenburg test track in Germany, setting a speed record for an electric production vehicle. Four electric motors delivering a combined 2,220 kW power the car, which BYD says can travel up to 450 kilometres on a charge.

The company also released official images of the upcoming Seal 06, which will feature a LiDAR sensor and a more powerful motor rated at up to 240 kW — a significant jump from the current model’s 160 kW. BYD sold 10,080 units of the existing Seal in June alone.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

In Australia, BYD is expanding its distribution channels through a partnership with local provider Smart, integrating novated leasing — a salary-sacrifice arrangement for company cars — directly into the purchase process for BYD and DENZA models. The offer targets roughly 2.5 million employees in government, healthcare, education, and corporate sectors. BYD’s Australian sales reached 52,335 vehicles in the first half of 2026, more than double the year-ago period. Electric vehicles accounted for 23% of all new car sales in Australia in June.

Meanwhile, in Hungary, the subsidy package for BYD’s Szeged plant has drawn scrutiny. Velkey György László, a state secretary in the Tisza government, said the previous administration had pledged more than 70 billion forints in infrastructure support and nearly 10,000 work permits for guest workers. The exact amount of direct financial aid remains a business secret but is reportedly comparable to the support given to CATL’s Debrecen facility. Two fatal accidents have occurred on the construction site this year, and former foreign minister Péter Szijjártó is now working for BYD.

The mix of record-breaking technology, surging Australian sales, and political controversy in Hungary underscores how far BYD’s international expansion has reached — and how uneven the reception can be from one market to the next.
