BYD's Global Engine Revs Higher as Domestic Sales Skid and a Recall Tests Trust

BYD is racing to build a global brand on multiple fronts — a Paris Saint-Germain sponsorship, a 100,000th electric vehicle in Brazil, and a near-overtaking of Toyota in Australia. Yet beneath the international momentum, cracks are widening in the company's home market, where the once-dominant Qin family has seen sales plunge by two-thirds, and a costly mislabeling error in Australia has forced the carmaker into full refunds.
The Shenzhen-based giant unveiled a long-term partnership with French football club PSG that runs through June 2029. Under the deal, BYD and its Denza sub-brand will serve as the club's official automotive partner for three seasons, providing vehicles for day-to-day operations. BYD vice-president Li Ke cited a shared passion between the two organizations, while PSG's distribution chief Richard Heaselgrave highlighted the brand alignment. The agreement is expected to help BYD expand its retail network in France and introduce Chinese EV technology to European consumers.
That global push extends to Latin America. On July 16, BYD's Camaçari plant in Brazil produced its 100,000th electric vehicle — a Seagull model, according to one report, or a Dolphin Mini in another. The facility now employs more than 5,500 workers and represents a 5.5-billion-real investment. Phase one capacity targets 150,000 vehicles annually, with a long-term ceiling of 600,000 units. Plant manager Li Tie has pledged to source half of all components locally by early 2027.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?
In Australia, BYD came within 243 sales of Toyota in June, as the Japanese incumbent's deliveries slumped 21.4% year-to-date. Chinese brands BYD, GWM, MG and Chery now occupy four of the top-ten spots in the Australian market, a shift that analysts say caught Toyota flat-footed. But that success was marred by a production-date mix-up: 1,265 customers received models — including the Atto 3, Sealion 8 and Shark 6 — bearing incorrect model-year designations. After initially offering A$1,100 compensation, BYD switched to full refunds or free exchanges for a proper 2026-model-year vehicle.
At home, the picture is starker. The Qin family, which sold 661,090 units in all of 2025, managed just 14,900 deliveries in June 2026 — a 66.17% year-on-year collapse. First-half sales totalled 149,174, down 45.62%. BYD hopes a new Qin Max with flash-charging capability and up to 240 kW of power will revive the line, but a launch date has not been set. Compounding the domestic drag, China's finance ministry will impose a 2% consumption tax on lithium-ion batteries from September 2026, rising to 4% a year later. Sodium-ion and solid-state batteries are exempt until the end of 2028, giving BYD and rival CATL added incentive to accelerate pilot production lines for next-generation chemistries.
On the technology front, BYD unveiled what it calls China's first homegrown 4-nanometer chip for autonomous driving, the Xuanji A3, which it claims delivers more than 2,100 TOPS of computing power. Chairman Wang Chuanfu has pledged over 100 billion yuan in research into driver-assistance systems. The company also plans to install 6,000 flash-charging stations globally by March 2027 — 3,000 in Europe, 2,000 in the Americas and 1,000 in Asia-Pacific. Wang reiterated a goal of lifting overseas sales to more than 1.6 million vehicles in 2026 and becoming the world's largest automaker by unit volume within five years. BYD has now exported more than 100,000 vehicles per month for six consecutive months; in the first four months of the year that tally reached 456,263.
The stock market has taken a cautious view. After a weekly gain of 8.19% that lifted the shares to €10.06, the stock gave back ground on Friday to close at €9.90, off 1.75% on the day. That leaves it 33.11% below its 52-week high of €14.80 from July 2025, and still 5.36% shy of its 200-day moving average of €10.63. The operational milestones abroad are thus far doing little to close the gap with the earlier peaks.
