On Monday, BYD’s stock careened to a fresh low for the year, touching €8.56 intraday — just below the prior 52-week floor of €8.60 — before closing at €8.66, a daily slide of 2.74%. The decline came on a day when the company’s safety credentials got a powerful endorsement: a viral video from China showed a Qin L plug-in hybrid surviving a severe crash with its battery intact and high-voltage system automatically shutting down. For a manufacturer that wants to become the world’s largest automaker within five years, that should have been a confidence builder. Instead, investors focused on the gathering storm in Brussels.

The European Commission is preparing to impose compensatory tariffs on Chinese-made plug-in hybrids, a segment that has so far escaped the full brunt of trade action. Pure electrics from China already face higher levies, while hybrids have been paying only the standard 10% import duty. BYD has leaned heavily on plug-in hybrids for its European push — last month it led German registration figures for the category. Higher tariffs would erase the price advantage that has helped the model gain traction, and the market is pricing in the risk ahead of any final decision.

Underlying the political headwinds is a domestic sales slowdown that continues to deepen. BYD sold roughly 383,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in May 2026, barely more than in the same month a year earlier. For the first five months of the year, total deliveries reached 1.4 million units — a drop of more than 20% compared with the prior-year period. Pure electrics fell to around 199,000 units in May from 204,000 the year before. Plug-in hybrids eked out a small gain, but the cumulative numbers for both categories remain firmly in negative territory. Exports — which hit over 160,000 vehicles in May — provide a partial offset, but they also increase the company’s vulnerability to European trade policy.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

On the operational front, management is dealing with a separate controversy in Hungary. Vice President Stella Li recently denied allegations of illegal earth-moving during the construction of a new factory in Szeged, calling the claims false and confirming that BYD has initiated legal proceedings. The plant is scheduled to start vehicle assembly in the fourth quarter of 2026 — a timeline that is critical for BYD’s strategy to leapfrog future EU tariffs by producing locally.

Technically, the stock is deeply oversold. The 14-day Relative Strength Index was quoted at 23.8 by one measure and at 22.8 by another — both firmly in the zone where short-term bounces often occur. The shares trade roughly 17% below their 50-day moving average and nearly 20% below the 200-day line. Yet such indicators are more a reflection of the mood than a predictor of recovery. BYD remains more than 40% off its 52-week high of €14.80 set last July, and the year-to-date loss stands at around 20% to 21%.

The path back hinges on whether the company can demonstrate a clear acceleration in monthly sales volumes or the EU softens its tariff stance on hybrids. Until one of those conditions materializes, the stock is likely to be driven less by long-term growth narratives and more by headlines from Brussels and Beijing.
