Circus SE Achieves Combat Deployment in Ukraine, but Guidance Slash Leaves Stock Reeling

Circus SE notched a rare operational success this week as its autonomous meal-preparation systems went live with Ukrainian forces near Kyiv, yet the news was all but eclipsed by a gruelling profit warning that has erased more than half the company's market value in just two trading days. The stock closed Friday at €2.06, down 17.4% on the day, and has now lost roughly 56% over the past seven sessions. The collapse follows an ad-hoc announcement in which Circus slashed its 2026 revenue outlook from a range of €44 million to €55 million down to a mere €5.2 million, while simultaneously widening its expected EBITDA loss from €6–8 million to around €17 million.
Management blamed the revision on a strategic shift: planned system deliveries have been pushed back into 2027 as the company works to improve the unit economics of its hardware and software platform. Rising costs tied to onboarding, integration and ongoing service per system have undermined the originally anticipated profitability profile. Circus emphasised that it remains adequately capitalised to fund the delay and the associated investments, but the market was in no mood to listen. The stock hit a new 52-week low of €1.87 intraday, representing a plunge of more than 91% from the November 2025 record of €23.50. Year-to-date the shares are down roughly 83%, and the 12-month decline stands at 85%. The sell-off has been so violent that the 14-day relative strength index has dropped to 13.7, deep in oversold territory, while annualised 30-day volatility has surged past 149%.
The same day brought a long-anticipated leadership reshuffle. Nikolas Bullwinkel, who remains sole chief executive and managing director, formally installed the new co-CEO and chief financial officer whose appointment had been flagged on 6 July. The incoming executive, whose identity had been kept confidential until the quarterly operational update, brings more than a decade of experience in corporate and financing strategy within the aviation and automotive industries. He replaces Fabian Becker, the long-serving CFO who leaves after nearly five years but will stay on in an advisory capacity and join the supervisory board of Circus Defence SE. Claus Holst Gydesen, the former co-CEO, moves to the chairmanship of the company's advisory board.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Circus?
Against this backdrop of financial turmoil, Circus's Ukrainian deployment offers a tangible — if commercially unproven — proof of concept. The company announced that its autonomous AI-powered food systems are now in live operation with the 3rd Army Corps of the Ukrainian ground forces in the Kyiv region, following certification by the Ukrainian food safety authority. Soldiers have access to the full technology stack, including hardware, AI software and a dedicated ingredient infrastructure for autonomous meal production. Circus described the initiative as the first deployment of autonomous catering systems in an active conflict zone, positioning it as a complement to existing field kitchens rather than a full replacement. Yet the operational milestone did little to steady investor nerves, as the guidance cut underscored that the economic foundation for scaling remains elusive.
Several research houses have responded by slashing their price targets and earnings estimates for Circus. mwb research was among those to downgrade its assessment on 17 July, though no specific price objective was disclosed in the announcements. The uncertainty leaves investors with little to hold onto until 2 September, when the company is due to release its second-quarter 2026 results. The new CFO faces the immediate challenge of restoring credibility, while Bullwinkel must convince the market that the push of revenues into 2027 reflects disciplined long-term planning rather than a deeper structural problem. With the stock trading at a fraction of its former high and technical indicators flashing extreme oversold, the next few weeks will test whether the defence contract and leadership shake-up can eventually outweigh the damage done by a single, devastating forecast.
