Corning's 280% Rally Meets the Reality of Profit-Taking as Insider Sales Mount

Corning’s stock surged 280% on AI fiber demand, then dropped 27% amid sell-off. Despite insider sales, fundamentals remain strong with new plants and partnerships with Nvidia and Amazon.

Corning has become one of the most unlikely stars of the artificial intelligence boom, but that stardom is proving as fragile as the glass it makes. After a stunning 280% surge over the past twelve months, the fiber-optics supplier has given back more than a quarter of its peak value in a matter of days, underscoring the risks that come with any stock that suddenly trades like a high-growth tech name.

Since hitting an all-time high of €238.30 on June 30, the shares have slumped 27.8%, closing at €172.06 on Thursday. The decline accelerated as a broader sell-off swept through semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks, with weaker-than-expected US jobs data for June adding to the pressure. The 14-day relative strength index now sits at 48.7 — neither overbought nor oversold, but squarely in a zone of uncertainty.

The core investment thesis, however, remains unchanged. Corning supplies the optical fiber that powers the networks inside AI data centers, and the demand is staggering. According to the company, these facilities require up to ten times more fiber than traditional hyperscale installations. That arithmetic has turned a longtime industrial supplier into a key enabler for Nvidia and Meta, and landed a billion-dollar fiber deal with Amazon.

To meet that demand, Corning is scaling aggressively. Three new plants are under construction in North Carolina and Texas, and total fiber-cable production capacity is expected to increase tenfold. In India, a new factory in Pune is slated to start production in the fourth quarter of 2026, while a facility in Tamil Nadu is in the final stages of qualifying to manufacture cover glass. The company is also collaborating with Nvidia on so-called co-packaged optics, a next-generation interconnect technology.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Corning?

The financial performance supports the narrative. Last quarter, Corning reported revenue of $4.34 billion, up 18.1% year-over-year, and earnings per share of $0.70. Management guided for EPS between $0.73 and $0.77 in the current period. The updated “Springboard” growth plan targets annual revenue of $30 billion by 2028 and $40 billion by 2030, driven by the photonics and optical communications divisions that sit directly in the path of the AI spending wave.

Yet the speed of the stock’s rise has attracted the attention of those closest to the company. Insider sales have totaled more than $54 million in recent months, and several large institutional funds trimmed their positions in the first quarter. While such moves can be read as simple profit-taking after a historic rally, they have added to the nervousness on the Street.

Analysts are not so easily spooked. Mizuho recently raised its rating, and the consensus price target of €180.11 implies a modest 4.7% upside from Thursday’s close — hardly a ringing endorsement, but a signal that the fundamentals remain intact. The 200-day moving average of €109.58 shows how far the stock has come: even after the correction, the share price stands 57% above that level.

Corning at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The annualized volatility of nearly 112% tells the real story. Corning has morphed from a quiet components supplier into a leveraged bet on digital infrastructure, and that transformation comes with wild price swings. With 70% of shares held by institutions and a dividend of $0.28 per share scheduled for September 29, the long-term conviction is still there. But the 27% retreat from the record high, combined with short-term costs of around $30 million from solar-wafer production, suggests the market is now demanding proof that the growth will materialize as quickly as the stock did.
