Corning shares have fallen 35% from a 52-week high, yet massive contracts with Meta, Amazon, and Nvidia position the glassmaker as a key AI infrastructure supplier, with analysts setting price targets above €220.

Corning shares have taken a brutal hit in recent days, shedding more than a third of their value from a 52-week high of €238.30 set in late June. The stock closed near €154-161 this week, a drop that has erased roughly $52 billion in market capitalization. On the surface, a 35% correction from a record spells panic. But beneath the sell-off lies a radical transformation: the once-staid glassmaker is now the physical backbone of the artificial intelligence boom.

The catalyst for both the rally and the volatility is a technological bottleneck in data centers. Modern AI clusters are hitting the so-called “copper wall” — conventional cables are too thick, generate excessive heat, and degrade signals over long distances. Corning’s new fiber-optic platform packs four times the capacity into a single strand, a fix that megascale data center operators cannot afford to ignore. AI racks require 36 times more fiber than traditional server setups, making Corning’s optical network architecture a structural necessity rather than a nice upgrade.

That necessity has translated into a spectacular order book. Meta signed a deal worth up to $6 billion for fiber cables and connectivity solutions. Amazon followed with a multibillion-dollar agreement to bolster its U.S. data infrastructure. The crown jewel, however, is Nvidia. The chip giant has invested $500 million directly in Corning to expand U.S. production capacity tenfold, and separately entered into a capacity agreement valued at $3.2 billion. These commitments position Corning as an essential supplier deep inside the Nvidia ecosystem, eclipsing older business lines like smartphone displays.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Corning?

Yet the stock’s trajectory illustrates the gap between infrastructure contracts and market sentiment. The current correction reflects a broader rotation out of semiconductors, triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and renewed inflation fears. An insider sale added to the unease: Vice President Seetharam sold 20,000 shares at $206.23 just before the slide — near-perfect timing that has raised eyebrows on Wall Street.

Analysts remain undeterred. Oppenheimer lifted its price target to $230, emphasizing Corning’s role in specialty glass substrates for advanced chips. Bank of America and UBS both see targets well above $220. UBS models a revenue trajectory reaching $30 billion by 2028 and $40 billion by the decade’s end, underpinned by the existing order pipeline. The current average analyst price target hovers around €183, well above the recent trading level.

Management is holding to its growth roadmap: it intends to boost annualized revenue by more than $4 billion by year-end while targeting an operating margin of 20%. Investors will get a fresh checkpoint with the July 28, 2026 quarterly report, where the company guides for earnings per share between $0.73 and $0.77. Meeting that range would underscore Corning’s operational strength as an AI supplier amid the short-term noise.

For now, the stock sits roughly 38% above its 200-day moving average, a sign that the long-term uptrend remains intact despite the sharp pullback. The aggressive swing from euphoria to fear is typical for infrastructure plays that run ahead of physical construction. With data center fiber demand multiplying, Corning has positioned itself not merely as a glassmaker but as the architect of the optical network powering the next generation of artificial intelligence.
