D-Wave Quantum: Ford and Food Chains Embrace Its Tech, But the Market Remains Unconvinced

D-Wave's quantum computing reaches factory floors with Ford and Pattison, but a 62% stock plunge and revenue recognition gaps fuel investor frustration.

D-Wave Stock Plunges 62% Despite Quantum Tech Breakthroughs and Record Orders

Ford Otosan is tuning its assembly lines with D-Wave’s quantum annealing. Pattison Food Group schedules store shifts using the same technology. The Canadian quantum-computing company has crossed the threshold from laboratory theory to factory-floor reality, yet its stock has been in almost relentless retreat. Since the October 2025 peak of €38.48, shares have lost 61.84%, closing recently at €14.69. For the year, the decline stands at 35.19%.

That operational momentum, however, has not been enough to offset a mounting frustration on Wall Street. In the first quarter of 2026, D-Wave booked a record €33.4 million in orders. The problem is that revenue recognition lags far behind — the company’s reported sales remain lumpy and thin relative to the swelling backlog. This gap between order intake and realized revenue has become the central fault line for investors seeking predictable growth. To broaden its technological reach, D-Wave acquired Quantum Circuits Inc. earlier this year, adding a “dual-rail” gate-model computing platform to its established quantum-annealing line. That move, along with an IDC Leaders designation and a new gate-model simulator, has done little to arrest the slide. A grant from the National Science Foundation, noted in recent filings, also failed to generate lasting enthusiasm.

Technical indicators underscore the market’s waning patience. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 30.9, flirting with oversold territory. D-Wave trades 27.6% below its 50-day moving average of €20.27 and 26.7% below its 200-day average of €20.03 — a clear downtrend in both the short and long term. Annualized volatility of 75.6% reflects the jittery mood, amplified by a broader risk-off rotation across technology shares. Even after bouncing to €15.19 on a recent Tuesday, the stock remains more than 36% above its March 2026 low of €11.12, a rebound that feels tentative at best.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

In an effort to reposition itself, D-Wave will move its listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq on July 27, 2026, citing a better fit for its innovation profile. CEO Alan Baratz has argued that the switch aligns the company with the marketplace’s technology identity. Yet the listing change, like the other narrative catalysts, has not stemmed the selloff. Analysts remain conspicuously bullish: the consensus price target of €32.90 implies a 124% upside from the current level. That disconnect has drawn comparisons to the dot-com era, when companies like Cisco commanded enormous valuations before collapsing as the hype cycle turned. For D-Wave, the question is whether the market has simply rotated away from speculative quantum stories or is pricing in a genuine earnings disappointment.

The next quarterly report will resolve that tension, at least for a time. Optimists point to the growing roster of industrial clients and the capacity expansion — including a planned headquarters move to Florida — as evidence that recurring revenue will eventually materialize. Skeptics counter that the yawning gap between bookings and recognized sales, combined with persistent losses, makes the current market cap of €5.43 billion hard to justify. Both sides are watching the same numbers: the moment when record orders start showing up on the income statement. Until that happens, the rally that ended in October 2025 may remain an island in a sea of red.
