D-Wave Quantum shares fell 7% on profit-taking, but record bookings of $33.4M and zero debt contrast with a Q1 revenue miss. Analysts average target $35, with a 248% revenue surge forecast for 2026.

The selloff sweeping quantum computing stocks caught D?Wave Quantum in its net on Friday, with the shares tumbling 7.13 percent to close at €17.52 in European trading. In the United States, the stock finished at $20.68, a decline of roughly 6.55 percent. This was no one?name story: IonQ shed about 9 percent, while Rigetti Computing also suffered notable losses as investors cashed in profits after months of heightened volatility in speculative technology names.

The irony is that D?Wave’s underlying business metrics tell a more nuanced story. The company posted first?quarter revenue of $2.9 million, coming in roughly 31 percent below analysts’ consensus that had expected more than $4 million. Yet bookings – orders signed but not yet recognised as revenue – hit $33.4 million, a figure that dwarfs the top line and signals robust demand. Two contracts stand out: a $20 million deal with a university and a $10 million agreement with a Fortune?100 company for Quantum?Computing?as?a?Service.

Adding to the dichotomy, D?Wave sits on a war chest of $588.4 million in cash with zero debt. This financial cushion is critical in a capital?intensive industry where development cycles stretch years into the future. Hedge fund Millennium Management has already placed a bet, having acquired roughly 2.27 million shares for about $16.4 million at the end of 2024.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Analysts have adjusted their expectations in response to the mixed quarter. Mizuho cut its price target to $29 but kept a buy recommendation; Canaccord Genuity lowered its target to $41. On average, 16 analysts see the stock at around $35.17, though the range is wide – from $19.58 to $45.00 – reflecting deep uncertainty about how quickly the company can convert orders into recurring, high?margin revenue.

Technically, the stock is down 26.28 percent from the start of the year, yet it still trades above its 50?day moving average, offering a modest technical floor. The forward?looking consensus, meanwhile, projects revenue of $43.4 million for fiscal 2026 – a 248 percent surge compared with the prior year – with the loss per share expected to narrow to $0.39.

On the product front, D?Wave is integrating technology from acquisition target Quantum Circuits, using so?called dual?rail qubits to improve error detection. The updated roadmap targets a system with about 175 physical qubits by 2028 and a commercially viable threshold by 2032. To rebuild investor confidence, management will host its first?ever Investor Day at the New York Stock Exchange on June 1, focusing on scaling strategy and embedding systems in commercial data centres. A user conference in London later in June will showcase practical applications.

For now, D?Wave’s story is a study in contrasts: a record order book and a fully stocked treasury against a revenue miss that underscores just how early the quantum computing narrative remains. The market is betting that orders will eventually turn into cash flow – but that transition will be the defining test for both the stock and the broader sector.
