The Bonn-based telecoms group is executing on two fronts this summer — locking down premium sports content for its streaming platform while simultaneously shrinking its share count through an aggressive buyback program. The twin strategies underscore how Deutsche Telekom is seeking to drive both subscriber growth and per-share earnings.

The company has secured exclusive German media rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a tournament that will be historic in its scope. Six nations across three continents are co-hosting: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco will stage the majority of matches, while Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina handle the opening ceremonies to mark the centenary of the first World Cup. The expanded 48-team format runs from June 8 to July 21, 2030, and will feature 104 games — all of which will air on MagentaTV. Board member Rodrigo Diehl cited the ongoing World Cup's audience as justification for the investment, noting that the company reached more than 200 million viewers and added significantly more new customers than anticipated. TV chief Arnim Butzen has also confirmed comprehensive coverage for Euro 2028, which the Telekom secured earlier. Whether the company will sub-license a portion of the 2030 games to free-to-air broadcasters remains unconfirmed; for the 2026 tournament, ARD and ZDF carried 60 matches.

On the capital allocation side, the latest tranche of Deutsche Telekom's 2026 buyback program is running at a brisk pace. Between July 6 and 10, the company repurchased 1,412,830 of its own shares via Xetra, bringing the total since the start of the current tranche on July 1 to 2,321,535 shares. This third tranche has a ceiling of €560 million and runs through September 30. For the full year, the group plans buybacks of up to €2 billion — a move that mechanically boosts earnings per share by reducing the outstanding float.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Despite this activity, the stock has faced headwinds. Deutsche Telekom shares are down roughly 2.6% on a 12-month basis and have lost about 2.8% year-to-date. The stock closed at €27.01 on Friday, gaining 1.09% on the day, after breaching its 38-day moving average — a constructive technical signal. The relative strength index stands at 55.7, a neutral reading that leaves room for further upside. Nevertheless, the share price remains around 21% below its 52-week high of €34.35 from February, though it has recovered about 14.7% from its June low of €23.54.

Analysts remain broadly optimistic. JPMorgan maintains an Overweight rating with a €40 target, while UBS keeps a Buy rating and a €36.60 target. Both banks highlight the company's stable cash flows and the strong market position of U.S. subsidiary T-Mobile US as key growth drivers. The immediate technical challenge lies at the 50-day moving average of €27.30; a sustained break above that level, combined with the ongoing buyback and the recently increased dividend of €1.00 per share, could underpin a recovery in the second half of 2026.

For now, the market is taking a wait-and-see approach to the sports rights outlay. The €560 million tranche earmarked for World Cup and Euro rights has not yet moved the needle on the share price. The real test will come when MagentaTV subscription figures for the Euro 2028 tournament become available — only then will investors be able to judge whether the streaming push is translating into a durable increase in paid users.
