A board member of Deutsche Telekom has stepped up to buy shares near the stock’s 2026 low, a rare vote of confidence from within the C-suite as the equity labours under the weight of escalating Middle East tensions. Rodrigo Francisco Diehl snapped up company stock on both 30 June and 1 July, days after the shares touched a 52-week trough of €23.54. The purchases come alongside a broader buyback that has already retired nearly 19.3 million shares since April, but the immediate trigger for the sell-off lies far outside the telecoms sector.

US airstrikes on targets in Iran, retaliating for tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, have rattled European equity markets. The DAX lost 1.1% on Wednesday morning to 25,175 points, while Deutsche Telekom’s stock traded at €25.56, down roughly 1% on the day. Brent crude surged more than 3% to around $76.57, reigniting inflation fears that disproportionately weigh on interest-rate-sensitive names like the German telecoms giant. Despite the daily drop, the stock has recovered more than 5% over the past week, though it remains 7.66% lower on a 30-day view and 8.29% in the red since the start of the year.

Analysts, however, still see substantial upside. Barclays trimmed its price target earlier this month from €39.50 to €36.50, yet maintained an Overweight rating that implies about 45% upside from current levels. The broader consensus is similarly optimistic, with the average analyst target standing at €38.19 – well above the market price. The gap between that optimism and the stock’s technical weakness is stark. At €25.56, the shares sit 25.59% below the 52-week high of €34.35 set in February, while the gap to the June low of €23.54 is a mere 8.58%. The 50-day moving average at €27.45 and the 200-day average at €28.72 both lie overhead, and the relative strength index of 41.5 points to indecision rather than a clear oversold bounce.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

That technical damage, however, has pushed valuations to levels not seen in years. Deutsche Telekom trades on a 2026 price-to-earnings ratio of 12.7 and a 2027 multiple of 11.3, a deep discount to its 10-year average P/E of 17.8. The dividend yield has climbed to an attractive 4.4%, offering a cushion for long-term holders. The buyback programme adds another layer of support: on a single day in late June, the company repurchased 727,344 shares at an average price of €24.79 via the XETRA exchange.

Away from the day-to-day noise, a structural growth story is taking shape. Deutsche Telekom is positioning itself as a key enabler of 5G-connected drone networks – what analysts call the "data space in the sky." Together with defence specialists such as Hensoldt and Volatus Aerospace, the company is expected to benefit from the integration of drones, sensors and mobile networks for real-time monitoring of critical infrastructure. Energy grids and logistics corridors could be managed via autonomous flight systems that rely on the low-latency, high-bandwidth connections Telekom supplies. For now, that thesis remains a long-term driver; short-term trading is dominated by geopolitics and macro data.

All eyes are now on the release of the Federal Reserve’s June meeting minutes, which could offer clues on the trajectory of US interest rates – a variable that continues to influence the valuation of European tech stocks. Domestically, Deutsche Telekom’s second-quarter results due in August will provide the next fundamental catalyst. Until then, the stock is caught between a cheap valuation and a bearish chart, with a sustained move above €26.00 likely to determine whether the recovery has legs or is merely a dead-cat bounce.
