Deutsche Telekom Juggles Buyback Support and Analyst Optimism Amidst Extended Recovery from June Lows
Published on 07/14/2026 at 22:22 | Redaktion boerse-global.deThe past few months have painted a contradictory picture for Deutsche Telekom: a stock that slumped more than 20% from its February peak, yet still draws a bullish €36.20 price target from UBS. With a fresh tranche of share repurchases underway and a string of technology projects in the pipeline, investors are weighing whether the recent bounce from a 52-week low has further room to run.
According to the company’s latest disclosure, Deutsche Telekom bought back 2,321,535 shares between July 6 and 10, 2026, via Xetra trading. The purchases are part of the third tranche of a buyback programme that began on July 1 and runs until September 30, authorising up to €560 million in acquisitions. In total, the group aims to repurchase up to 23.5 million shares in this tranche. The wider 2026 programme, carried out by a mandated bank, has a volume of up to €2 billion and is designed to reduce the number of shares outstanding, thereby supporting earnings per share over the long term.
The buyback comes at a time when the stock is trying to stabilise after a sharp sell-off. On its most recent close, Deutsche Telekom shares traded at €26.68, down 0.19% from the previous day’s €26.73. Over the past week, the stock has gained 3.41%, suggesting near-term momentum is improving. However, the monthly picture remains negative, with a decline of 4.30%, and the year-to-date loss stands at 4.27%. Over the trailing twelve months, the shares have dropped 12.87%.
From the 52-week low of €23.54, reached on June 30, the stock has recovered roughly 13.34%. Still, it remains 22.33% below its peak of €34.35 from February 27. Technical indicators point to a neutral market: the relative strength index sits at 52.7, and the 30-day annualised volatility is a noticeable 31.35%. The share price is currently trading 2.47% below its 50-day moving average of €27.36 and 7.17% below the 200-day average of €28.74, underscoring the still-fragile medium-term trend.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Despite the price turbulence, UBS has reaffirmed its buy recommendation on Deutsche Telekom with an unchanged price target of €36.20 — a level that would imply a 36% upside from current levels and even exceeds the stock’s 2026 high. The analysts’ confidence stands in contrast to the market’s recent nervousness, which had been stoked by concerns over competition from US satellite operators. On the options market, leveraged products such as a BNP Paribas call warrant with a €27 strike and a September 8, 2026, valuation date have been trading in the €1.29 to €1.31 range, reflecting some speculative interest in a continued recovery.
On the operational front, Deutsche Telekom is advancing several high-tech projects. Domestically, it is pushing ahead with fibre-optic expansion in multiple German communities through a series of new groundbreakings in July. At the European level, the company has secured the lead role in the EU-funded PETRUS2 project, which aims to build secure quantum communication networks across borders. Partners include Thales, Airbus and SES, with the ultimate objective of creating a sovereign European quantum communication infrastructure (EuroQCI). In addition, Deutsche Telekom, together with Ericsson, has been involved in setting up a private 5G campus network for HHLA at the Container Terminal Altenwerder in Hamburg, supporting automated terminal operations since late May 2026.
Meanwhile, the group has also issued a seasonal security warning, noting a rise in smartphone thefts during the holiday travel period. Scammers are posing as finders and sending phishing SMS messages to obtain Apple ID or Google account credentials, with iPhones particularly targeted. The company recommends activating lost mode, blocking the SIM card and avoiding clicking on unknown links.
Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For shareholders, the interplay between the repurchase programme, the optimistic analyst target and the gradual price recovery creates an ambiguous near-term outlook. The gap between the June low of €23.54 and UBS’s €36.20 target highlights the wide range of possible outcomes as the stock works to regain lost ground.
