Deutsche Telekom: Record World Cup Viewership and a Rating Upgrade Can’t Shake the Regulatory Gloom

Operational wins like a World Cup viewership record and Fitch upgrade fail to lift Deutsche Telekom stock, as US China equipment bans and German rural network risks loom.

Deutsche Telekom is riding a wave of operational triumphs – a World Cup viewership record, a Fitch credit upgrade, and upgraded full-year guidance – yet its stock is mired near a 52-week low. The disconnect highlights a market fixated on two looming clouds: a fresh round of US regulatory curbs on Chinese network equipment and a nationwide German network quality test that could force hefty rural investments.

The Frankfurt-listed shares closed Friday at €26.31, a mere 2.3% above the year’s trough of €25.71 touched on June 22. While the 0.61% daily gain outpaced the DAX’s 1.29% slide, the broader picture is grim: the stock has shed nearly 11% over the past 30 days and 5.6% since January. The relative strength index sits at 34.3, edging toward oversold territory, and the 200-day moving average of €28.89 is now roughly 9% above the current price. The €26.00 level has become a critical short-term support; a break below it would put a fresh yearly low squarely in play.

World Cup Boost and Upgraded Outlook

Underlying this technical fragility is a string of strong operating data. Germany’s MagentaTV platform has drawn more than 36 million fans to its live coverage of the 2026 World Cup group stage, marking the most successful week in the platform’s history. New contract signings more than doubled compared with the 2024 European Championship. Management responded by raising the full-year forecast: operating profit is now expected to reach around €47.5 billion, with free cash flow surpassing €20 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Network Scrutiny at Home

Yet the domestic front also carries risk. The Bundesnetzagentur is running a nationwide measurement week through July 1, asking citizens to document mobile reception quality via an app. Deutsche Telekom claims 5G coverage of more than 99% of the population, but regulator data from late 2025 still showed gaps on 12% of the country’s land area. If the crowd-sourced data reveals significant blind spots, it could invite political pressure to accelerate rural investment – a costly proposition at a time when capital budgets are already under strain.

FCC Tightens the Screws

Across the Atlantic, a new regulatory shoe is about to drop. From July 2026, the US Federal Communications Commission will enforce stricter bans on new network components from Huawei and ZTE. T-Mobile US, the Deutsche Telekom subsidiary that accounts for a large chunk of group cash flow, is directly subject to the rules. The move also raises the likelihood that European regulators will push for similar clampdowns, potentially forcing earlier-than-planned equipment swaps that would eat into investment budgets.

Rating Upgrade Offers Some Relief

In a rare bright spot for the credit picture, Fitch lifted Deutsche Telekom’s rating from BBB+ to A–, citing the company’s strong position in the German market and robust cash flows from the US operations. The upgrade, however, has done little to galvanise equity investors.

Merger Rumours Simmer

Adding to the uncertainty, media reports continue to circulate that the group is weighing a new holding structure that would fully integrate T-Mobile US. No official confirmation has been made, and the market will be watching the second-quarter earnings release on August 6 for any concrete hints. Until then, the stock looks caught between a record operational performance and a thicket of regulatory headwinds.
