Deutsche Telekom Scores a Double Win in AI and Quantum, Yet the Stock Holds Its Breath
Veröffentlicht: 15.07.2026 um 21:24 Uhr, Redaktion boerse-global.deA German research consortium quietly released an open-source language model named “Soofi S” on July 13, 2026, and with it delivered a major validation of Deutsche Telekom’s sovereign cloud strategy. The 31.6?billion?parameter model was trained entirely on T?Systems’ “Industrial AI Cloud” in Munich, consuming roughly 253,000 GPU?hours on Nvidia B200 systems. Coordinated by the KI Bundesverband, the project demonstrates that Telekom’s B2B arm can provide the computing muscle for privacy?compliant AI applications in Europe — a capability that helps the group reduce its reliance on the volatile consumer business.
Just one day later, Telekom and the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology won two EU?backed quantum?communication projects. Telekom will lead PETRUS2, a cross?border infrastructure for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) networks, funded through the Connecting Europe Facility and involving Airbus, Thales and SES. The second project, HarmoniQCI, is led by AIT and focuses on standardising Europe’s quantum networks. Together they aim to build a coherent, ultra?secure communication fabric for the continent.
Despite these twin technological milestones, the stock remains stuck in a consolidation phase. The shares closed Wednesday at €26.48, down 0.49% on the day, having gained 3.68% over the past week. The monthly picture is weaker: a decline of 5.02%. Since the start of the year the stock is off 4.52%, and over twelve months it has lost 12.32%.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Analysts, however, are not losing faith. Citigroup raised its price target on Wednesday, citing stable operational trends, while UBS reiterated a buy recommendation with a €36.20 target. The current price sits about 22.9% below the 52?week high of €34.35 (set in late February) and 12.49% above the 52?week low of €23.54 (recorded in late June). The 50?day moving average of €27.33 and the 200?day average of €28.73 both lie above the current level, underlining the technical weakness.
The relative strength index stands at 50.8, indicating a neutral market stance, but the 30?day annualised volatility of 31.25% suggests lingering nervousness. A share buyback programme is providing a floor: between July 6 and 10 the company repurchased a further 2.3 million shares. The group’s market capitalisation is €122.6 billion.
Two key dates now dominate the calendar. T?Mobile US, Telekom’s American subsidiary, will report quarterly results on July 23. It is simultaneously executing the largest tariff migration in its history, moving eight million customers to more expensive “Experience” plans. That upgrade cycle should support margins in the unit that still delivers the bulk of group profit. Telekom itself publishes half?year numbers on August 6, when investors will look for evidence that the strategic push into AI and quantum is translating into operating results.
Meanwhile, Telekom extended its partnership with the German Sports Aid Foundation as a national sponsor until the end of 2027, with an increased emphasis on para?sports. The group’s longer?term positioning as an infrastructure provider for secure networks may not spark a short?term rally, but the technology wins — both in AI and quantum — reinforce a narrative that the company’s future lies well beyond the residential telecom market.
