Deutz Begins Serial Production of Unmanned Ground Vehicle as Ukraine Orders 25,000 Units

The Cologne-based engine manufacturer has transformed from a traditional powertrain supplier into a defense technology integrator overnight. Deutz announced Tuesday that industrial production of the "Gereon" unmanned ground vehicle has commenced at its Ulm facility — a milestone that marks the company's formal entry into the robotics and military hardware space.
At the heart of the pivot is a partnership with ARX Robotics that dates to October 2025. The software-defined Gereon system, already battle-tested for evacuation and supply missions in the Ukraine conflict, will now be assembled under Deutz's own roof. The scale of demand is vast: Ukraine alone placed orders for roughly 25,000 units in the first half of 2026 — a volume that justified the production ramp-up in Ulm.
Deutz is supplying more than just the drivetrain. The company is also providing the energy infrastructure — mobile generators and storage systems that allow the robots to operate autonomously in the field. Initial deliveries from Ulm are scheduled for late summer 2026.
The current Gereon model is pure battery electric, but Deutz is already planning hybrid and conventional combustion-engine variants to extend range and mission endurance. The vehicles are controlled via ARX Robotics' "Mithra OS" software platform, which will be deeply integrated with Deutz's powertrain technology. For the Cologne group, the deal opens access to a global defense production and service network.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz AG?
Shares of Deutz closed at €9.25 on Tuesday, a 2.58% decline on the day, despite the strategic announcement. The stock has gained 4.93% over the past seven days and is 7.25% higher year-to-date. On a twelve-month horizon, the equity is up 19.90%. Still, it remains roughly 26% below the 52-week high of €12.49 reached in late February 2026. The relative strength index stands at 46.7 — a neutral reading — while 30-day annualized volatility sits at 38.13%, reflecting the stock's persistent swings.
Technically, the picture has clouded. The share price has slipped below its 50-day moving average of €9.78 and has also crossed under the 200-day line — a bearish signal that has caught the attention of chart watchers.
The timing of Deutz's defense push aligns with an accelerating market backdrop. At the NATO summit in Ankara, Germany announced defense spending of €124.7 billion for 2026, a massive increase that is rippling through the domestic industrial base. In May, the "other vehicle manufacturing" segment — which is heavily weighted toward defense goods — posted an 85% jump in orders. Rheinmetall and TKMS have also recently reported multibillion-euro contract wins.
Deutz AG at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For Deutz, the robotics venture represents a chance to break free from the cyclical swings of its traditional industrial engine business. The combination of powertrain engineering with defense software creates a niche in autonomous logistics that is gaining traction on modern battlefields. The first deliveries from Ulm in late summer will provide the clearest indication of how quickly the Ukrainian order translates into revenue — and whether this new chapter can lift the shares decisively above their current technical resistance.
