German office furniture makers are racing to meet a surge in demand for movement-friendly workplaces after a landmark study quantified the lethal impact of prolonged sitting. The research, published in PLOS Medicine by scientists at the University of Glasgow and Harvard University, tracked 91,292 participants from the UK Biobank over twelve years and found stark correlations between sedentary behavior and cancer mortality.

Every additional hour of uninterrupted sitting raises the risk of dying from cancer by nine percent, the study shows. But the remedy is surprisingly modest: interrupting that sitting pattern with any movement cuts the risk by 19 percent per hour. Even five minutes of vigorous physical activity daily reduces cancer mortality by 22 percent; light activity delivers a 12 percent reduction.

Wiesner-Hager Möbel, a German office furniture company, is already capitalizing on the trend. It expects turnover of 43 million euros in the 2026/27 fiscal year, up from 39 million the prior year. In spring the company launched the “paro_3” office chair, designed to encourage micro-movements throughout the workday.

Yet manufacturers face barriers. Industry executives criticize public tenders for imposing excessive requirements and two-year price locks, which stifle innovation in ergonomic design. The sector is calling for less bureaucracy and more direct awards to allow faster adaptation to health-driven demand.

Technology Supports the Shift

Hardware makers are also responding. ViewSonic will launch the VG2719U-4K monitor in July, featuring 150 millimeters of height adjustment and a pivot function — ideal for alternating between sitting and standing positions. The ofinto Cloud chair, praised in tests for its synchronous mechanism and ten-year warranty, targets users who switch postures frequently. For home offices, Homall offers electric height-adjustable desks with memory presets and USB ports, making it easy to stand up at regular intervals — exactly what doctors now recommend.

Real Estate Adapts to the Movement Economy

The rise of active workstations is also reshaping commercial real estate. In Hamburg, 221,000 square meters of office space were transacted in the first half of 2026, with experts forecasting 400,000 to 450,000 square meters for the full year. Investors are increasingly focusing on existing buildings rather than new constructions. Prime rents rose to 35.20 euros per square meter in the second quarter. The goal: retrofitting older properties with modern ergonomics and infrastructure to create healthier work environments that keep employees moving rather than chained to a seat.
