Investigations into a recent cluster of fires across Germany are exposing a wide range of causes—from negligent smoking to suspected arson and technical malfunctions—as authorities work to piece together what happened in each case.

Police in Detmold have largely wrapped up their inquiry into an industrial fire that broke out in early May in the Bentrup-LoĂźbruch district. Investigators say there is no evidence of intentional arson. Instead, the blaze was likely triggered by carelessness, with an improperly discarded cigarette under scrutiny. A forensic expert has been commissioned to provide a final determination. Damage is estimated at several tens of thousands of euros. No one was hurt, and the business was able to continue operations.

But Detmold is far from the only fire scene drawing attention. On June 4, a major blaze erupted in a production hall in Wetter an der Ruhr. Around 100 emergency responders were dispatched because chemicals were stored inside the building. The Technical Relief Agency (THW) later assessed the structure for collapse risk.

Solar-panel fires have also kept crews busy. In early June, photovoltaic panels atop a greenhouse in Vetschau caught fire, causing roughly €150,000 in damage. A similar incident occurred on June 5 in Pischelsdorf, where panels on a company roof burned. Investigators in both cases suspect a technical defect.

While Detmold rules out arson, other jurisdictions are pursuing that angle. In Arendsee, officers arrested a suspect on June 2 after two buildings were damaged by fire. Investigators have ruled out technical failure there. In Bergheim, the State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over a case after unknown individuals set fire to several vehicles belonging to the district administration overnight on June 3. The buses in question are used for deportations. Authorities are examining a possible political motive. Meanwhile, in Freiburg, two camper vans have been burned in recent nights, likely by arson, with damage estimated at around €140,000.

Some cases remain stubbornly unresolved. In Werl, a 62-year-old resident died following an apartment fire. Due to the extensive destruction, investigators have been unable to determine the cause. In Cologne, an arson attack targeting a well-known figure from the previous year remains unsolved. Officials are considering dropping the case if no new leads emerge.

Elsewhere, a different kind of hazard lingers. Bad Meinberg’s historic spa park is expected to remain closed until early next week. The closure stems from a carbon dioxide leak that occurred during maintenance work back in March. While gas levels have returned to normal, stationary monitoring stations are now being installed to ensure long-term visitor safety.
