At the European level, the European Commission is reportedly planning to delay enforcement of sanctions under the methane regulations that took effect in May 2024 until 2027. Environmental groups have labelled the three-year grace period a watering-down of the rules. Industry representatives counter that practical implementation clauses are essential to avoid disrupting operations.

On the technical side, the sector is adapting to new safety standards. Explosion protection (ATEX) and corrosion resistance must now be assessed separately for gas-handling components, manufacturers stress. One example cited in industry guidance is the e4MSMOR side-channel compressor, rated at 1.5 kW, which moves 138 m³/h at 250 mbar overpressure. For inter-stage gas transport between fermenters, storage tanks and upgrading units, more powerful models delivering up to 263 m³/h are required — provided they meet ATEX classifications such as II 3GD T3. Experts emphasise that equipment selection always demands a project-specific review of process data.

Workplace safety has also come under scrutiny following rescue drills conducted in July at waste-treatment and sewage plants. Simulations of retrieving unconscious workers from underground basins confirmed the acute risk of oxygen deficiency. Emergency responders are now calling for mandatory multi-gas detectors and specialised ventilation gear during maintenance on digestate storage tanks.

The pressure to modernise is visible in concrete projects. The Höingen plant must undergo a comprehensive expansion by the end of 2028 to comply with EEG requirements. Plans include new fermenters, gas storage units and more powerful engines, driven by a shift in feedstock away from maize toward triticale and slurry. Similarly, the Rosien facility is investing in biomethane upgrading equipment to feed directly into the natural-gas grid — a strategy that operators see as the only way to secure profitability beyond 2030.
