Processing times vary dramatically by location. In Hamburg, authorities often complete renewals within two weeks. In Berlin, the wait stretches to six or eight weeks. Patients with permanent impairments from which no improvement is expected may receive an unlimited-validity pass.
Total Disability Rating Built on Principle, Not Arithmetic
Determining the overall degree of disability (GdB) is not a simple sum of individual scores. A GdB of 50 — the threshold for both the severely disabled ID card and access to the severe-disability pension — corresponds to a total impairment roughly equivalent to losing a leg or experiencing spinal stiffening. According to a ruling by the Saxony-Anhalt State Social Court, minor additional impairments typically do not push the total GdB higher.
Labor Court Spelling Out Termination Timelines
The classification as severely disabled carries major implications for employment. The Baden-Württemberg State Labor Court underscored in a decision dated December 19, 2025 that statutory deadlines for extraordinary dismissals must be strictly observed — even when a disability determination procedure is still pending. Employers must adhere to the two-week period stipulated in the German Civil Code, regardless of the procedural status. If the GdB is later lowered below 50, the severe-disability pension is not automatically affected. Legal transition periods apply after a reduction notice, and a pension already being drawn remains intact even if the recipient's health improves after retirement begins.
Political Push for Less Red Tape
At a specialist exchange hosted Thursday by the Protestant Federal Association for Participation, representatives from multiple parliamentary factions spoke out against cuts to integration assistance. Instead, they called for cutting bureaucracy and advancing digitalisation to simplify access to benefits.
Looking ahead, the nationwide "Shift Change" action day is scheduled for September 24. On that day, people with and without disabilities swap workplaces to foster mutual understanding and dismantle barriers. Last year, roughly 4,800 individuals took part.
