German Insurers and EU Channel €1.23 Billion to Combat 47% Surge in Mental Health Sick Leave

A 47 percent increase in psychological illness-related absences over the past decade has galvanised a broad alliance of health insurers, universities, and policymakers across Germany and the European Union. The EU’s flagship health programme, EU4Health, has earmarked a budget of €1.23 billion, with a central initiative on psychosocial risks set to launch in 2026.
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) will run the programme, complemented by the EU-wide campaign “Healthy Workplaces 2026–2028,” which focuses explicitly on mental well-being at work. In Germany, the statutory pension scheme Deutsche Rentenversicherung offers preventive programmes such as “RV Fit,” aimed at preserving employees’ long-term ability to work.
As European institutions ramp up their focus on workplace health and psychosocial risks, UK employers face their own set of legal obligations under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. Keeping accurate risk assessments and safety documentation is essential for compliance and protecting your workforce. Regional cooperation targets small businesses and nursing homes
The AOK health insurance fund in Saxony-Anhalt and Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences have extended their partnership until 2028. Together they run the Institute for Occupational Health Promotion (IFGP), which provides free counselling and coaching to small and medium-sized enterprises. The insurer also funds a endowed professorship at the university.
In Bavaria, a separate project kicked off in spring 2025: the AOK Bavaria and Allensbach University are developing a healthy-onboarding scheme specifically for the nursing sector. Pilot trials are scheduled for 2026, with full rollout targeted for 2027. The package includes sleep management, resilience training, and mentoring for new hires.
Saxony-Anhalt has also extended a state programme for assisted nursing-assistant training through 2028, designed to lower dropout rates and improve integration of foreign trainees.
DAK prize and private-sector quality seals
The DAK-Gesundheit insurer has opened applications for its 2026 German Workplace Health Management (BGM) Prize, offering in-kind awards worth a total €60,000. Submissions must be received by 4 July 2026, and the ceremony will take place on 29 September 2026 in Cologne. A related online seminar on 29 June 2026 will address the role of corporate health management in integrating international skilled workers.
On the corporate side, VR Bank Dreieich-Offenbach has once again earned a quality seal from the R+V BKK health fund, valid until summer 2028. The bank invests roughly €200,000 each year in staff health programmes. At the Robert Bosch Hospital in Stuttgart, regular employee surveys help tailor health-management measures to actual workplace strains.
German companies invest heavily in health-management quality seals, but for UK employers the fundamental legal starting point is compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. Falling short can mean costly penalties and enforcement action. A free toolkit offers nine practical tools including risk assessments, a director liability guide, and compliance checklists that help you meet your legal duties. Already trusted by over 37,000 UK businesses, it is ready for immediate use. Get the free Health & Safety at Work Act Toolkit
Screenings abroad highlight international dimension
The push for workplace health is extending beyond Europe. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a trade union federation and MEDLATEC Healthcare have signed an agreement providing 20,000 free screening tests for hepatitis B and diabetes to workers, underscoring the growing global attention to occupational health prevention.
