A 26-year-old security guard for Deutsche Bahn is fighting for his life after being shoved from a moving train near Karlsruhe on July 17. The attack happened at around 19:35 on regional line 44 between Offenburg and Karlsruhe, when a fare inspection escalated into a violent altercation. Witnesses say a 36-year-old passenger—intoxicated, with a criminal record and no valid ticket—ripped a train door from its hinges and pushed the employee onto the tracks at roughly 120 km/h near Ettlingen-Bruchhausen.
The victim suffered life-threatening head injuries. His condition remains critical but stable. The alleged attacker was arrested on the train minutes later.
Despite the severity of the attack, the Amtsgericht Karlsruhe refused to issue the arrest warrant requested by state prosecutors, who are investigating on suspicion of attempted homicide or grievous bodily harm. The suspect, a German national who was already on probation, was released. Prosecutors are now reviewing their legal options.
The attack on the Deutsche Bahn security guard highlights a worrying gap in worker protection. Many employers still lack proper risk assessments to address potential violence in the workplace. The decision has sparked fury from railway unions. GDL chairman Mario Reiß called for tougher judicial responses and fundamental legal reforms. “Rail personnel need stronger rights to intervene effectively in conflict situations,” he said. “The legislature must provide better protection for workers against violence.”
The EVG union joined the criticism. Its regional chairman Amberger demanded new security strategies for regional rail services. Both unions view the incident as the culmination of a worrying trend.
Official figures confirm the grim trajectory: authorities recorded 2,690 attacks on railway staff across Germany in 2025, an 11 percent increase from the previous year. Deutsche Bahn has impounded the affected train for forensic examination. The case has reignited debate over safety protocols and judicial responses to violence against public transport employees.
