Germany’s labor market continues to absorb workers across a broad spectrum of roles, with official data for mid-June showing 571,413 open full-time positions and 41,181 registered mini-jobs — the country’s term for marginal, low-hours employment. Behind the aggregate figures lies a fragmented landscape: high demand in healthcare and education coincides with acute shortages in seasonal agriculture and a growing appetite for green-energy researchers.

The Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) recorded the full-time vacancies, while private portals added thousands more. The platform “Make it in Germany” listed 32,122 total positions, with the health and social sector alone accounting for 13,483 unfilled roles. Production and manufacturing followed with roughly 6,779 openings, and construction posted over 3,136 advertisements.

Mini-job opportunities also remained plentiful. Beyond the agency’s count, HeyJobs listed an additional 10,860 such positions, of which about 6,000 explicitly welcomed career-changers with no industry experience.

Pay for mini-jobs varies sharply by region and sector. In Marburg, garden and landscaping assistants earn between €13.90 and €15.00 per hour, while in Heilbronn — in the south — rates climb to between €16.00 and €19.00. The top earner is a gastronomy role in Düsseldorf, where the company Hands On GmbH pays up to €22.00 per hour.

Retailers and logistics firms are also recruiting heavily. dm-drogerie markt, Ernsting's family, and Ikea are among the chains seeking sales staff and warehouse workers, often requiring Saturday shifts.

In the research and development sector, the Helmholtz Centre GFZ in Potsdam is looking for postdocs specializing in geothermal energy and several doctoral candidates. The Westermann Group, a publishing and education company, is hiring for editorial, product management, and IT roles at its locations in Braunschweig, Cologne, and WĂĽrzburg.

Across the border, neighboring labor markets show similar trends. In Switzerland, the portal publicjobs.ch listed 1,648 vacancies in administration, schools, and non-profits. In Austria, dm offers new sales staff an entry salary of at least €2,376 gross per month for a 20-hour work week.

Seasonal fluctuations shape the market further east. In western Serbia, the raspberry harvest begins on June 20, and farmers report an acute shortage of pickers. They are offering daily wages of up to €51, plus free accommodation and meals. Workers from EU countries need a category D visa and a work permit.

For those curious about modern logistics, the music-equipment retailer Thomann has organized a guided tour of its highly automated distribution center in Treppendorf on June 18, giving visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the technology driving today’s warehouse operations.
